Frosh newcomer makes big collegiate debut for the Bears
IRVING, Texas – Baylor soccer freshman midfielder Maddie Algya was named Big 12 Freshman of the Week, announced Tuesday by the conference office.
Helping lead Baylor to a 2-0 start to the 2018 season for the second-straight year, the Highland Village, Texas, native was a tour de force for the Bears, scoring two goals and two assists for a Big 12-leading six points on the weekend.
She scored the opening goal of the season for the Bears vs. ACU, standing as the game winner in a 2-0 contest.
Her most impressive effort came in the Sunday 6-1 rout of Samford, scoring a goal and two assists for the Bears, logging all 90 minutes on the field.
Her former high school teammate, Taylor Moon, was also given consideration, scoring two goals and an assist of her own.
The award for Algya is the 33rd overall conference weekly honor in program history, the 12th for the top freshman, formerly referred to as the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.
The last Baylor freshman to earn the honor was in 2017 when Jennifer Wandt received the nod in a week that saw BU sweep the selections, joining Precious Akanyirige (Defensive) and Aline De Lima (Offensive) in the conference's weekly honor roll.
Joining Algya on the week one honors were Katie McClure (Kansas) as the Offensive Player of the Week and Marissa Zucchetto (Texas Tech) as the Defensive Player of the Week.
