A year ago, Jeremy Meadows and Connor Laktasic ran unattached and didn't really factor into the race at the Bear Twilight Invitational.
In Friday's season-opening meet at the Heart O' Texas Soccer Complex, Meadows won the 6,000-meter race in 18 minutes, 17.2 seconds and Laktasic placed fourth at 18:35.3, helping the Baylor men win the team race by a comfortable 20-point margin over runner-up Texas State (43-63).
"I was really impressed with Jeremy," associate head coach Jon Capron said. "He was just in the race last year. And for him to bounce out and manage the race like that was really impressive. Connor, the same thing. He was a big, bug-eyed freshman from New Mexico last year. And I think if he gets a little more real estate and it gets a couple degrees cooler, he's going to be right on Jeremy's heels and we're going to be pretty good."
Despite placing four runners in the top 11, led by junior Alison Andrews-Paul in third overall, the Baylor women were edged by SMU, 38-45. The Mustangs' duo of Hannah Miller (13:18.7) and Svenja Ojstersek (13:23.4) were 1-2 pretty much the whole way in the 4,000-meter race, with Andrews-Paul next across the line in 13:48.2
"I'm a half-miler, and I think I finally figured out what it feels like to be a cross-country runner," said Andrews-Paul, who had placed 23rd and 17th in her first two Bear Twilight meets. "I do feel a lot stronger this year, I think I'm a lot smarter, and I'm being patient with myself. I really was pushing it the last (1,000 meters), and I'm excited to know I was able to do that, because I haven't been able to do that in the past."
For the men, the other scoring runners were junior Matt Henderson (7th, 18:42.0), sophomore TJ Sugg (8th, 18:43.9) and freshman Cal Johnston (24th, 19:10.4). Rounding out the top seven were seniors Henry Huff (28th, 19:16.0) and Jeff Kirwin (34th, 19:33.3).
Meadows ran from start to finish, speeding up every time someone got close to him, "just to get in their heads a little bit."
"Based on what Coach Cap and (former Baylor runner Jordan West) have been saying, I definitely thought I had a chance," said Meadows, who finished 10th last year. "I thought I would take a risk and see what happens. It's definitely a good way to start the season with a nice, healthy fast race."
Besides Andrews-Paul, the other scoring runners for the Baylor women were sophomore Brooke Gilmore (7th, 14:07.0), freshman Celia Holmes (8th, 14:09.2), sophomore Sarah Antrich (11th, 14:26.7) and junior Lindsay Walton (16th, 14:37.8). Freshman Mazie Larsen also recorded a top-20 finish, placing 19th in 14:43.7.
Considering the women held out two of their top runners in junior Gabby Satterlee and freshman Kayla Windemuller, it was a strong showing against an SMU team that was third in the first NCAA regional rankings.
"Gabby will probably be back in next week, and that will be huge, because she'll be right there with all those girls," Capron said. "Having her probably would have been the difference today. SMU got out quick and looked great, but I was really impressed with the way we closed and I was really impressed with the freshmen. Top to bottom, we had some really great races on the ladies' side."
Baylor will be back in action next Friday, Sept. 7, at the Gerald Richey UTA Invitational at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie, Texas.
