Bears close nonconference slate against UTSA, Virginia Tech
WACO, Texas – 18th-ranked Baylor volleyball (6-3) will close nonconference action by competing in the UTSA Invitational against the host Roadrunners and Virginia Tech Friday and Saturday at the Convocation Center in San Antonio.
Both matches are slated for a 12 p.m. CT start, and the Baylor vs. UTSA matchup will air live on Facebook.
BEARS CLOSE OUT NONCONFERENCE SCHEDULE IN SAN ANTONIO
• Baylor volleyball will close out nonconference play with the UTSA Invitational in San Antonio, facing the host Roadrunners and neutral site foe Virginia Tech Friday and Saturday.
• The Bears look for their first neutral site and road wins of the 2018 season, sitting currently at 0-1 at both locations.
• Baylor and Virginia Tech will play each other for the first time on Saturday.
• Baylor holds a 18-4 all-time series advantage against UTSA.
• BU is 1-0 against UTSA under fourth-year head coach Ryan McGuyre.
• Baylor holds a 38-12 nonconference record under McGuyre.
BAYLOR MOVES TO NO. 18 IN LATEST AVCA COACHES POLL
• Despite a 2-1 weekend, the Bears moved down three spots to No. 18 in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll.
• On Aug. 27, the Bears received a program-best No. 12 ranking. The No. 12 ranking shattered the previous the all-time program record set in 2009 at No. 17.
• During that season, BU was ranked for 10 straight weeks and peaked at No. 17, which stood as the program-high ranking for eight years in the 36-year history of the AVCA poll.
• The Bears are ranked for the 30th time in program history and have been listed in the poll for nine straight weeks dating back to the 2017 season.
• Baylor earned a preseason ranking for only the second time in program history and first since its No. 21 ranking in 2000, coming in at No. 16 on Aug. 8.
• Baylor has 10 matches slated against current ranked opponents or teams receiving votes, including: No. 3 Texas, No. 6 Wisconsin, No. 16 UCLA, No. 21 Marquette, No. 23 San Diego, Iowa State and Kansas State.
• Dating back to last season, the Bears are playing in their 22nd consecutive match as a ranked team.
• Baylor is currently 6-3 as a ranked team in 2018 and is 15-6 as a ranked team under McGuyre.
PRESSLEY EARNS BIG 12 OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOR
• After a standout weekend, sophomore Yossiana Pressley was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.
• Pressley earns a program-leading 10th career weekly honor from the conference and her first award this season. She set a single-season Baylor record in 2017 with five Offensive Player of the Week distinctions and four Freshman of the Week awards.
• The Cypress, Texas native was the top attacker in the Big 12 last weekend, averaging 5.85 kills per set and 6.27 points per set in a 2-1 weekend for the Bears.
• In the Bears' historic Friday night win over then-No. 2 Wisconsin, Pressley averaged 8.00 kills per frame after she set a new career high with 32 kills on a .313 hitting efficiency.
• She followed up that performance with 29 kills against UTRGV and then posted 15 kills against Rice to wrap up the Baylor Classic. She earned the tournament's Highest Scorer award.
• Pressley is the second Bear to be honored this season after redshirt junior Shelly Fanning was named the Big 12 Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Aug. 27. The 2017 squad compiled a program-record 15 honors in a single season.

• Despite dropping the opening set, 15th-ranked Baylor volleyball produced its highest ranked win in program history with a 3-1 victory over No. 2 Wisconsin last Friday at the Ferrell Center, 18-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-22.
• Handing Wisconsin its first loss of the season, the Bears' highest ranked win before Friday came on two occasions: at No. 9 UCLA on Dec. 5, 2009 and against ninth-ranked Kansas State on Sept. 24, 2003.
• Sophomore Yossiana Pressley led all players with a career-high 32 kills on a .313 hitting efficiency and became the first Bear since former All-American Katie Staiger to record over 30 kills in a match.
• 15th-ranked Baylor volleyball (6-3) posted a four-set win against Rice and five-set defeat to UTRGV at the Baylor Classic last Saturday at the Ferrell Center.
• Against UTRGV, Yossiana Pressley posted 29 kills while Shelly Fanning and Aniah Philo posted double-digit putaways for the second-consecutive match. Defensively, four Bears had double-digit digs, led by Tara Wulf with 14.
• Against Rice, Pressley led the way with 15 kills while Fanning and Gia Milana combined for 22 kills, respectively. Redshirt freshman Marieke van der Mark posted a career-high seven kills on a .227 efficiency on the right side.

• BU kept the momentum as the team hit .429 and limited UTSA to a -.061 hitting clip in the second. Fueled by Staiger and Fanning's seven combined kills, the Bears took the 2-0 advantage with a 25-14 second-set win.
• BU struggled to come back from an early 8-3 deficit in the third set, allowing UTSA to hit .500 and drop the frame, 25-18.
• Baylor and UTSA went toe-to-toe in the fourth set and tied up the match nine times before BU took the lead for good.
