For the first time all year, Baylor cross country coach Jon Capron will see the men's and women's teams at full strength when the Bears host the Big 12 Championship Saturday morning at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course.
"That's what I'm most excited about. We haven't had a meet this year where everybody's been ready to go," Capron said. "I think we've got everybody going, so I'm excited to see what that means. Everybody had a good meet at A&M right before this, it was a good jumping-off point, but nowhere near what we're capable of. I think we're confident with what we did, but know that we all have a little more in the tank."
While the Baylor women have been mainstays in the upper echelon of the league, finishing as high as second, the men haven't been in the top half since a fifth-place finish in 2003.
"I think it would be good for us to shoot for the top five," said sophomore TJ Sugg, who placed 35th at last year's conference meet, when the Bears placed eighth out of nine teams. "We haven't had quite as good a placing in the last few meets as we'd like, but I think it would be really strong for us to utilize the home territory and go for top five."
It helps that the Bears return four of last year's five scoring runners, including junior Connor Laktasic (34th), senior Matt Henderson (55th) and sophomore Ryan Day (58th). Laktasic, Sugg and freshman Ryan Hodge have been consistently in the team's top three at every meet this fall.
"I think (Hodge), Connor and I are pretty interchangeable," said Sugg, who had top-10 finishes at each of the first two meets. "And then, we've got some help from Ryan Day and Cal Johnston and the ones in the back. I think we're pretty strong right now."
On top of being as healthy as they've been all year, the men get to run on a familiar course at Cottonwood Creek that they use for training runs every week.
"Knowing the course for the past four years, I feel pretty prepared and I know all the nook and crannies. And it will definitely give us an advantage," said Henderson, a scoring runner in the first two meets. "But, that doesn't mean the race will be handed to us. The other teams are pretty well-prepared, too."
Capron said the course knowledge could act like a fifth runner for Baylor, which last hosted the Big 12 meet in 2013, when the women were fifth and the men seventh.
"You always think back when you're racing to 'OK, I know how hard I worked,''' Capron said. "And not only do I know I worked really hard, but I worked hard right here at this very exact point. . . . You harken back to those workouts that put you in the right place at the right time and say, 'You know what, I worked hard enough to be where I should be at the end of this race."
Rounding out the roster for the men are freshmen Kade Hulett, Cal Johnston and Philip Roxas, sophomores J.B. Sandlund and Jeremy Meadows.
"You find your teammates that you're close to in training, you stick with them, push them, help them out. We're a team," Henderson said. "It's very much doing what you do in practice."
Ranked seventh in the NCAA South Central Regional that includes No. 2 Texas, the Baylor women return three scoring runners from last year's ninth-place finish at the conference meet in Ames, Iowa – sophomore Celia Holmes (65th) and seniors Hana Marscheck (68th) and Haley Everroad (69th).
Baylor finished 12th at last week's Arturo Barrios Invitational in College Station, with senior Gabby Satterlee leading the way at 42nd individually with a 6,000-meter time of 21:36.5. Senior Lindsay Walton returned last week after third-place finishes in the first two meets, while Holmes has been one of the team's top two runners at all four meets.
"We've had some injuries, I've been sick, so it's nice to see that we're far enough away from that now to see us maybe in full force," Walton said. "With this being our home course, I think we could surprise ourselves and maybe some other people, too. We'll see."
Joining Holmes, Satterlee, Walton, Marsheck and Everroad are freshmen Chloe Gangnath and Sophia Leidner, sophomores Sarah Antrich and Mazie Larsen and senor Isabella Lackner.
With the NCAA South Central Regional Championships held in two weeks in Fayetteville, Ark., Capron will use the conference meet as a qualifier or eliminator to pick a top seven.
"If you want to go to regionals, you better show up at the conference meet," Capron said. "We'll have 10 (runners) and we'll be ready to go."
WACO, Texas – For the first time since 2013, Baylor cross country will host the Big 12 Cross Country Championship Saturday morning at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course.
"It's a neat opportunity," associate head coach Jon Capron said. "We want to get in on the excitement that's rolling around campus. What a fun week, right? What a neat opportunity to have these kids get to race one of their best meets of the year right here at home. It's a neat thing."
With four men's teams in the top six of their respective regions and five women's teams in the top seven (including Baylor), the 2019 conference championship will be a showcase of quality teams in preparation for regionals in two weeks.
"We should be fighting right in the middle," Capron said. "There are some stretch goals we have to kind of get up a little higher than the middle. The ladies have a really good opportunity. There are a few more opportunities for them. The guys' field is a little deeper, and the teams that are up there are up there. We want to belong. We want to go in there and fight and see what we can do with a home-course advantage."
Baylor has yet to run a race in 2019 with every member of the team in action, but Saturday looks to be the first time with the Bears at or near full strength.
"That's what I'm most excited about," Capron said. "We haven't had a meet this year where everybody's been ready to go. I think we've got everybody going, and I'm really excited to see what that means."
The men's 8K will get things started at 10 a.m. CT, followed by the women's 6K at 11 a.m. CT. Live results can be followed at http://results.deltatiming.com/xc/2019-big-12-xc-championships.
