At least for now, Baylor doesn't worry about that number before its name.
The Bears (19-1, 9-1), who go on the road to face Texas Tech (14-10, 4-6) at 1 p.m. Saturday in Lubbock, are No. 1 in the RPI, No. 2 in the NCAA selection committee's early reveal and No. 3 in this week's AVCA poll. But, they train more like they're 26th, "like we are so close, but we have a lot of work to do," senior right-side hitter Gia Milana said.
"I feel like it's always in the back of everyone's mind," Milana said of the rankings, "but the key is the back. You don't want to put it on your chest, but it's always on our hearts. We want to be able to train like the No. 2 team in the country, like we still have something to show, but play with a No. 1 mindset on the court."
Baylor saw its program-record streak of 31 consecutive sets snapped in a 3-0 road loss at then-No. 4 Texas on Oct. 23 and also struggled in wins over West Virginia and Oklahoma. But, the Bears seemed to get back on track with a 3-0 sweep of Iowa State last Sunday when junior outside hitter Yossiana Pressley led the way with 19 kills.
"I left (that match) with some smiles, and we're back on track in rhythm offensively, our error percentage is way down," coach Ryan McGuyre said. "Marieke (van der Mark) definitely gave us a good start. All of our wins are team wins, but we got good contributions from more than just Yossiana and Shelly (Stafford)."
Looming is a rematch with Texas on Nov. 20 at the Ferrell Center, but Baylor will play Tech on the road and then host Kansas before a showdown with the Longhorns that could be for at least a share of the Big 12 title.
"I think we just keep racticing and just keep taking it one match a time," said van der Mark, who had a career-high 10 kills in the Iowa State match. "We don't want to look too far ahead. We are very excited to play (Texas) again, play them at our own house. But, Tech is a good opponent. We've got to take care of business there and just be ready for them first."
McGuyre said it actually helps that the Bears still have plenty to work on to get ready for the NCAA tournament in December.
"I think we've only had one good clean match since (Texas), and we weren't that clean beforehand," McGuyre said. "Each match is an opportunity to see if our serving is getting a little bit tougher. Is our side out staying at the level it needs to be? We've been leading the conference in blocking, but it's not been as dominant as I think it needs to be."
Baylor is going for its fourth-consecutive 20-win season for the first time in program and double-digit conference wins for the third-straight year, another program first.
After winning four of its first six conference matches, Tech has dropped four in a row, including getting swept at Baylor just three weeks ago.
Second nationally with 5.98 kills per set, Pressley has moved up to fifth on Baylor's all-time list in the rally-scoring era with 1,254 kills and needs 100 more to pass Tisha Schwartz (1,353, 2001-03).
