As each of Baylor guard
Juicy Landrum's 3-pointers swished through the net, the decibel level at the Ferrell Center just kept getting higher and higher . . . and higher.
With a sellout crowd of 10,284 that included an estimated 6,500 Waco area students bused in for the annual "I'm Going to College Day" Wednesday matinee, the noise level reached a jet plane-level of 131.7 decibels when she drained her NCAA-, Big 12- and Baylor-record 14
th trey with 2:01 left in the seventh-ranked Lady Bears' 111-43 victory over Arkansas State.
"Once the first one went in, and I heard the kids, I was like, 'OK, OK," said Landrum, who matched her previous high of five 3-pointers by halftime. "And I just felt like it got louder as time passed by."
Landrum nearly doubled her previous scoring high (23) by pumping in 42 points, the 10
th-most in program history, while adding eight rebounds and seven assists. But, it was her 3-point shooting display that delighted the elementary and middle school students that packed the house.
"She did it with a lot of young kids here that will always hear that name Juicy for the rest of their lives, because she grew up in Waco," said Baylor coach
Kim Mulkey, whose team improved to 9-1 with its 46
th-straight home win. "These are Waco little ones, and they're like, 'Gosh, I was there that day when she broke the record.'''
Going into Wednesday's game, the senior guard from nearby La Vega High School was just 10-of-26 from outside the arc, averaging just over one made 3-pointer per game. She hit her first one 33 seconds into the game, helping the Lady Bears get off to a 12-0 start before the Red Wolves (3-7) even scratched the scoreboard.
"We've been off for games for two weeks or so, and you don't really now sometimes how they're going to react," Mulkey said. "They're ready to go home for the holidays, hard practices, some days not so hard. I just thought we were really into and very enthusiastic the way we played. I thought they had a little extra pep in their step today, and it could have been because of Juicy's shooting."
Sophomore forward
NaLyssa Smith scored 13 of her 15 points in the first quarter as Baylor maintained its double-digit lead and was up 30-15.
After taking just two shots in the opening period, Landrum drained four 3-pointers without a miss in the first four minutes of the second quarter and had 15 points by intermission.
Moon Ursin's jumper in the last minute gave the Lady Bears a comfortable 58-19 cushion at the break.
In a meeting with the coaches at halftime, Mulkey was told that Landrum was within striking distance of the Baylor school record of nine 3-pointers shared by Mandy Hayworth and former All-American Odyssey Sims.
"Juicy's so quiet, plays a role, kind of unassuming, just let me fit in, and I'll help you win ballgames, but don't bring attention to me," Mulkey said. "When you're feeling it as a shooter, you're feeling it. So, I went in at halftime and told them, 'If you get a chance, let Juicy break the record.' Well, I was talking about the Baylor record."
After tying the school record midway through the third quarter, Landrum missed the next two before hitting back-to-back 3-pointers in a stretch of 47 seconds, tying the Big 12 record and pushing Baylor's lead to 82-31 with 2:54 left in the period.
"Coach has pretty much been getting on me about shooting the ball," said Landrum, who finished 14-of-23 from outside the arc. "I've just got to take chances and shoot it, even if I'm missing. I kind of get down on myself, but she motivates me to keep shooting."
Before that, Landrum led a fast break and made a behind-the-pass to junior wing
DiDi Richards for a layup at the bequest of her coach.
"Did y'all not see me when she was coming down the floor?" Mulkey said. "I was like, 'It's time to throw it behind the back.' I'm a point guard, man, it was beautiful."
Subbed out for the rest of the third quarter, it looked like Landrum's day might be done. But, needing just one more 3-pointer to break the conference record set by TCU's Amber Ramirez two years ago, she came back on the floor and set that mark three minutes into the fourth quarter.
Eying one more record, Landrum drained treys on back-to-back possessions and finally left the game with 1:58 left, celebrating with her teammates before she could even make it back to the bench.
"That's my partner," said grad transfer point guard
Te'a Cooper, who had eight points and a career-high-tying 10 assists. "Once she starts leaving her hand up, you know it's a wrap."
Landrum's 14 3-pointers actually eclipsed Baylor's previous team single-game record –
Trinity Oliver added a 15
th for the Lady Bears' final points – and broke the NCAA record of 13 set by Lamar's Moe Kinard against Denver on Nov. 23, 2018.
As Mulkey said, "This was not just the Juicy Show today." Smith was a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor, finishing with 15 points and seven rebounds;
Queen Egbo had her fifth double-double of the year with 13 points and 10 rebounds;
Erin DeGrate gave Baylor its fourth double-digit scorer with 11 points; and Richards had eight points, seven assists and two blocks.
"It feels great," Landrum said of the NCAA record. "I just know we have a lot of basketball left to play, so I can't think about. I've just got to keep moving forward."
Baylor will have another extended break before returning to face Morehead State (3-7) at 7 p.m. Dec. 30 and then opening Big 12 play on the road at Oklahoma (7-4) on Jan. 4.
