LAWRENCE, Kan. — The No. 7 Texas Longhorns ended the Baylor Bears' season Friday in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Big 12 Women's Tennis Championship with a 4-1 win at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
The Longhorns improved to 17-3 on the year and advanced to Saturday's semifinals.
Baylor played Texas tough in doubles. After the Longhorns' Fernanda Labrana and Tijana Spasojevic beat Baylor's Paula Barañano and Liva Kraus 6-1 on court two, the other two doubles matches were nip and tuck. Jessica Hinojosa and Dominika Sujova evened it up with a 6-4 win over Texas' Bojana Markovic and Petra Granic.
Angie Shakhraichuck and Kris Sorokolet battled from behind to force a tiebreaker on No. 1, but Texas prevailed 7-6 with Anna & Bianca Turati edging the Bears.
Shakhraichuck ended up with Baylor's lone point on the No. 5 court when she defeated Labrana, 7-5, 6-0. The win evened her record to 6-6 on the singles court in an injury-shortened season where she won her last two.
Baylor ended its season at 9-21 on the year. With no seniors on the team and two players serving a year-in residence, the Bears bring a multitude of experience back for the 2019-20 season.
