Bears finish season in NCAA tournament for 22nd-straight year
THE RUNDOWN
ORLANDO, Fla. – After a close doubles point, sixth-ranked and sixth-seeded Baylor men's tennis (25-6) saw its season come to a close with a 4-0 loss to fourth-ranked and third-seeded Florida (25-3) Thursday night in the NCAA quarterfinals at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
BU is now 59-21 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and 5-8 in quarterfinal matches. With the loss, Florida takes a 7-6 lead in the all-time series and evens the postseason meetings at 1-1.
Baylor had the upper hand to start the match in doubles. After being up 4-3, Will Little and Matias Soto dropped a 6-4 contest to Oliver Crawford and Alfredo Perez at the No. 2 spot. Then, the top-ranked duo of Jimmy Bendeck and Sven Lah fell 7-5 to Johannes Ingildsen and McClain Kessler on court one for the early 1-0 Florida lead.
BU found itself in a hole during singles play when it only took two first sets courtesy of No. 112 Adrian Boitan and 20th-ranked Johannes Schretter.
UF went up 2-0 after Bendeck dropped a 6-1, 6-0 match to McClain Kessler on court six.
Baylor fell down 3-0 after 76th-ranked Lah lost 6-2, 6-2 to No. 59 Andres Andrade at the No. 5 spot. BU ultimately dropped the match when 25th-ranked Soto was upset by 54th-ranked Sam Riffice, 6-3, 6-4, on court two.
Before the match was suspended, Schretter held a 6-4, 2-5 lead while Boitan led 6-4, 1-3 on court three. 78th-ranked Little dropped his opening set but was knotted up in the second set at 3-6, 5-5.
