MT’s Velcz Makes Collegiate Team Debut

Bears go 3-2 in Monday tournament play
TULSA, Okla. – Baylor men's tennis hit the courts on Monday for the first day of the qualifier draws in the ITA All-American Championships. Freshman Zsombor Velcz competed in his first collegiate team tournament, racking up doubles win No. 1 in his young career.
THE RUNDOWN
Seniors Finn Bass and Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi both recorded wins in the singles draw Monday, with Bass defeating Pabolo Alemany from Memphis, 7-5, 7-5, and Grassi Mazzuchi topping Auburn's Jan Galka, 6-3, 6-3. Velcz's singles play began with a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Pedro Rodenas from Duke in round one.
The doubles pairing of Velcz and Tadeas Paroulek got their start in the tournament with a 6-4, 7-6(8) win over Gonzaga's Matthew Hollingworth and Sasha Trkulja. Shortly after, the duo fell to No. 1 seeded Tanapatt Nirundorn and Togan Tokac from North Carolina State, 7-5, 1-6, 1-0(4).
Marko Miladinović, Ethan Muza and Justin Braverman competed in the singles pre-qualifying draw on Saturday and Sunday, putting up a combined 4-3 record between the main bracket and consolation match.
Miladinović won in both the round of 256 and 128, but fell to Younes Lalami, 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 64. Braverman moved out of the first round, beating Carles Anton, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, before losing to Chase Ferguson, 6-4, 6-2, in round two.
After a 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-2 loss in the first round of singles action Saturday, Muza found success in his consolation match Sunday evening, defeating Anton, 6-2, 6-0.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Bears return to action on Tuesday morning with Bass and Grassi Mazzuchi in the second round of singles play. Velcz returns to singles and takes part in a qualifier consolation match against Klopper from Vanderbilt at 12:30 p.m.
