Pushed on pretty much every court, the third-ranked Baylor men's tennis team knocked off its second-straight top-10 team, beating No. 7 Virginia, 4-2, Saturday afternoon in front of a record crowd at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.
After putting the doubles point on the board and getting straight-set wins from Finn Bass and Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi at Nos. 5 and 6 singles, the Bears (11-0) got the clincher when Sven Lah bounced back from a second-set loss to defeat 29th-ranked Ryan Goetz, 7-5, 0-6, 6-1, on Court 3.
"I think the fans were amazing," said Lah, who improved to 6-1 in spring dual matches. "I feel like if we can get so many people out here every time, I think we're going to be in a great place. But, all credit to them for supporting us throughout the whole match."
In a six-day stretch that should prepare Baylor for next week's ITA National Indoor Championship, the Bears knocked off then-No. 9 Texas, 6-1, followed by a 4-1 win over Tulsa and Saturday's 4-2 victory over Virginia (5-2). Virginia and Texas are also part of the elite 16-team tournament that starts next Friday in Seattle.
"We're probably going to play some of them again, so we just have to be ready," Baylor coach Michael Woodson said. "Our guys need to see the level and understand what they're going to have to do to execute and ultimately put themselves in a position to win big tournaments and national events, which is why they're here. I think it showed us a lot, both positive and areas for improvement. We just get better from these."
Leading on all three doubles courts, Baylor picked up the opening point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3. Adrian Boitan and Tadeas Paroulek remained unbeaten with a 6-4 win over Virginia's Jeffery van der Schulenburg and Jackson Allen at No. 3, then Mazzuchi and Matias Soto upset the 22nd-ranked tandem of Chris Rodesch and William Woodall, 7-5, to clinch.
"What I was happy about the way the match started was that not only was our intensity good and our focus high, we played with great discipline," Woodson said. "We didn't let ourselves get frustrated and we didn't make bad decisions. It was fantastic to see them stay focused, and then see that carry over to the singles."
With Mazzuchi rolling over Alexander Kiefer at No. 6, 6-0, 6-4, and Bass bouncing back from his first loss to defeat Allen, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 5, the Bears seemed in control up 3-0. But, the Cavaliers answered with straight-set wins at Nos. 2 and 4 singles and 30th-ranked Inaki Montes de la Torre was leading Boitan at No. 1 when Lah dropped the second set.
The window of opportunity was there for Virginia, which was coming off a 4-0 loss to now-No. 1 Ohio State. But, Lah closed it with a dominant third set. After dropping the first set 6-4, Boitan was trailing 5-2 in the second-set tiebreaker when the match ended.
"Adrian stuck with me. He was battling as much as I saw," said Lah, who was playing on the court next to Boitan. "It always helps to have someone else still on the court with you. A little bit less pressure. I think the momentum started going my way, and I used it really well."
The draws for the ITA National Indoor Championship will be released soon. Based on the current rankings, Baylor would be the No. 3 seed and face 14th-ranked Texas (5-3) in the opening round. The Longhorns bounced back from the loss to Baylor to sweep Rice, 7-0.
"We're going to be playing on indoor fast courts up in Seattle, so we're going to have to take care of our serves," Woodson said. "It's not easy to break up there. I think we can do a better job with our service games up and down, so I think that will be a focus no matter who we play."
WACO, Texas – The No. 3 Baylor men's tennis team had their second top-10 win of the week with the 4-2 victory over No. 7 Virginia on Saturday afternoon. There were a record-setting 431 fans at the match in the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.

On the front half of the courts, things were heating up. Court two was the next to finish, with No. 17 Rodesch besting Soto at 7-6(5), 6-3. Boitan and Lah were in a race to the finish on courts one and three, respectively, with the score at 3-2 in the Bears' favor. QUOTABLE – Head Coach Michael Woodson
"We were really able to learn from our frustrations that came out yesterday. When you play a team like Virginia at home with a great crowd, we're going to raise our level a little bit. Our energy, our focus, our intensity is going to be higher. We played with great discipline to start the match. We made them play to the end of the set, we didn't let ourselves get frustrated and we didn't make bad decisions. It carried over into singles, some of those tight sets, coming back from breaks really served us well today. The crowd makes a difference in these matches. Our guys love playing in front of big crowds. I'm so appreciative of everyone that came; the students, tennis alums, basketball fans – I hope they enjoyed it as much as we do. It was a spectacular event. Win or lose we are just thankful for the crowd and happy to be at home."
QUOTABLE – Senior Sven Lah
"I felt great in the third set, especially in the beginning. I tried to lock it in, it's always important to get ahead if you can early in a set. That kind of momentum, if you can keep it, helps. So, that started rolling. I had four great points, up 4-0, thought I could've finished the set 6-0 but it was a good effort. Adrian stuck with me - he was battling from what I saw. It always helps to have someone else on the courts with you. I felt the momentum starting to go my way and I felt like I used it. The fans did their job, they were amazing. If we can get as many people out here every time, I think we're going to be in a great place. All the credit to them for supporting us throughout the match."
