Jackson turns in quality start as Terrapins complete the sweep

One swing, one at-bat, one pitch, one game.
After being swept by Maryland, falling 8-4 in Sunday's series finale, Baylor coach Steve Rodriguez said things can turn around just like that.
"Next thing you know, it all clicks," Rodriguez said. "It's just a battle. I've been in funks where I was 1-for-15 to start a year, and you just think that you never hit before. It's hard when you've got three or four guys who that's happening to. That's what makes this game so great. One swing changes it, but adversity is what's going to keep you working, keep you humble and make you really respect and enjoy the good days."
Matt Shaw and Maxwell Costes both homered twice and drove in a combined five runs as the visiting Terrapins left Baylor Ballpark with their third-straight four-run win.
"They were a regional team last year, and that's what I wanted. I wanted to get our tests," Rodriguez said. "When we get to conference, we're not going to be jumping into something we haven't seen before."
Maryland also got another strong outing from a starting pitcher. Jason Savacool went eight innings, giving up three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and no walks.
Making his Baylor debut, Nevada grad transfer Jake Jackson kept the Bears in it, giving up three earned runs on five hits with seven strikeouts in five innings. After giving up Shaw's first homer, Jackson left with the Bears trailing by just one run, 4-3.
"Obviously, I'd like to have a couple of those pitches back that I made mistakes on," Jackson said. "But, I competed, tried to give my team the best opportunity to win the game, and obviously we fell short. It's a tough weekend, but we'll get back to work and get ready for Duke next weekend."
Baylor took its first lead of the weekend in the bottom of the first. Tre Richardson had a one-out single through the left side, went to third on Jared McKenzie's single up the middle and scored on a wild pitch.
After starting the season 0-for-8, Richardson has had three hits in his last five at-bats, going 2-for-4 in Sunday's game.
"I think a lot of it was just going back to what I know, going back to the basics and just going up there and having good at-bats," Richardson said. "Today, it worked. (Saturday), I felt like I missed a few baseballs, but I feel like my at-bats got better and better over the weekend, and today they finally started falling."
Maryland scored two in the top of the second, tying it up on a Costes solo homer. Troy Schrefler doubled on a ball rightfielder Kyle Nevin misread and came around to score an unearned run when Ian Petrutz reached on a throwing error by third baseman Esteban Cardoza-Oquendo. That was one of Baylor's four errors and one of Cardoza-Oquendo's four errors over the weekend.
"I think the frustrating part, to be honest, was we did not play well on defense," Rodriguez said. "We lost a couple balls in the sun, which was frustrating, then we threw a couple balls away. Sometimes, being over-aggressive on certain things can lead to bad results."
The Bears tied it up in the third, when Cardoza-Oquendo led off with a double to the gap in left-center field and scored on Richardson's grounder to second.
Jackson retired six of seven batters over a stretch from the second to fourth inning, but gave up the lead again in the fifth when Drew Grace doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Troy Shliger. Shaw blasted a solo homer over the centerfield wall, extending the lead to 4-3.
After Baylor scratched across a two-out run in the bottom of the fifth on hits by Cortlan Castle, Jack Peneda and Richardson, Maryland scored in each of the next three innings and had an 8-3 lead going into the ninth.
Making his first appearance since March 23, 2021, sophomore righthander Will Rigney gave up a first-pitch homer to Costes in the eighth, but then retired the next six batters in a row with four strikeouts.
"Watching him do what he can do is really special," Rodriguez said of Rigney. "When you have a guy who has that kind of velocity and that kind of command with the quality of pitches he does, now it's just a matter of solidifying the role."
Much like Saturday's 9-5 loss, Baylor kept battling right to the end. Pinch-hitters Antonio Valdez and freshman Cody Grebeck reached on a walk and single, respectively, and Kobe Andre drove in a run with a sac fly to center.
Baylor's seven-game homestand continues with a game against Houston Baptist (0-3) at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday before another three-game series next weekend against Duke (2-1).
"We all understand that you can't win every game, but it's a long season," Richardson said. "The trick is being positive. Just always being positive and understanding, 'OK, I screwed up, but I'm going to move on and I'm going to make the next play.' Because that's what baseball is. Baseball is a game of chance. We're just on the wrong side of it right now."
THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball (0-3) dropped its series finale to Maryland (3-0) Sunday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark, 8-4.
The Terrapins scored runs in five different innings and hit four home runs to complete the weekend sweep.
Senior RHP Jake Jackson (0-1) turned in a quality start for the Bears, throwing five innings while allowing three earned runs on five hits. He added seven strikeouts in his Baylor debut.
The Bears got on the board first as Tre Richardson scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first, but the Terps were quick to respond by posting two runs in the top of the second off a solo home run and the first of BU's four fielding errors on the day.
Baylor evened the tally in the bottom of the third thanks to a RBI groundout from Richardson that scored Esteban Cardoza-Oquendo, but UMD was next to strike in the top of the fifth with a sacrifice fly and another solo home run.
BU cut the lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the frame following Richardson's second RBI of the day, this time a sharply hit single, but that would be it for the Baylor offense until the bottom of the ninth.
Maryland added runs in each of the next three innings to extend its lead to 8-3. In the final frame, Antonio Valdez worked a walk and moved around to third on Cody Grebeck's first-career hit, then later scored on a Kobe Andrade sacrifice fly.
That would be all as UMD reliever Nick Lorusso finished off Jason Savacool's (1-0) strong effort of eight innings in which he scattered seven hits and allowed three runs with six punchouts.

On takeaways from today's game…
"We definitely have things to improve on. I think the frustrating part, to be honest, we did not play well on the defensive side of it. We lost a couple balls in the sun, then we threw a couple balls away. Sometimes being over-aggressive on certain things can lead to bad results. I thought we did a really good job of maintaining some good at-bats today. The pitchers did an OK job of keeping us in the ballgame, but I think the mistakes on defense kind of cost us today."
Sophomore INF Tre Richardson
On this season's opening series…
"It's the first weekend, and Maryland's a good ball club. They're a regional team. We knew we were going to get tested right out of the gate. I think it's going to be something where we're knocking off the rust a little bit. I have no doubt that we're a really good team and we just didn't play to the best of our ability. But, it's early, and if we're going to lose, we're going to have to lose right now. Once we get hot and once we start rolling, there's no saying where we can take ourselves."
Senior RHP Jake Jackson
On takeaways from this weekend…
"It's adversity. Nobody likes to lose, but I think losing makes you tougher. You learn a lot about yourselves in the moment when you lose. So, obviously, we're going to come together a lot more and just find a way to win and grind it out throughout the rest of the season."
WHAT'S NEXT
The Bears (0-3) return to Baylor Ballpark for a midweek clash against Houston Baptist (0-3) on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 6:30 p.m. CT.
