Defending national champion Baylor (26-6) was awarded the No. 1 seed for the East Region when the NCAA Tournament selections were announced Sunday and will begin its path with a short ride up I-35 to Dickies Arena in Fort Worth.
The Bears, earning a top seed for the second-straight year, will open the tournament against 16th-seeded Norfolk State (24-6) at 1 p.m. Thursday. Eighth-seeded North Carolina (24-9) plays ninth-seeded Marquette (19-12) and first-year head coach Shaka Smart at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, with the two winners meeting on Saturday with a berth in the Sweet 16 in Philadelphia on the line.
"I'm really excited about Fort Worth," said Baylor coach Scott Drew, whose team had a five-game winning streak snapped with a 72-67 loss to Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship quarterfinals last Thursday in Kansas City.
"The guys worked really hard to make that happen, getting a No. 1 seed two years in a row. And with the COVID year (2020), we were set to be a No. 1 seed. That would have been three times in a row, and that's really rare air. There only three teams that have done that since 2010. Great accomplishment for what the guys have worked hard to achieve. The perks of that are playing in Fort Worth, so really excited about that."
Despite battling injuries all year, including season-ending knee injuries to freshman guard Langston Love and junior forward Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua, the Bears won a share of their second-straight Big 12 regular-season title.
Baylor has posted a 9-4 record against the 2022 NCAA Tournament field, with wins over Kansas, Villanova, Texas, Michigan State, TCU and Iowa State.
"We couldn't control our own destiny, and you always like to do that rather than having to rely on other teams," Drew said of earning the top seed. "At the same time, I think you take a step back and say, to be a No. 1 seed this would be three years in a row, that's pretty impressive.
"That means guys have done a great job putting the program first. And now, it's the best time of the year, and it's time to put your best foot forward."
The Bears are led by Arizona transfer James Akinjo, a senior point guard and first-team All-Big 12 pick who is averaging 13.4 points and a Big 12-best 5.7 assists. Sophomore guard LJ Cryer is averaging a team-high 13.5 points, but has missed 11 of the last 12 games with a foot injury.
"Even with a lot of injuries, we're still one of the best teams in the country," said Akinjo, who's playing in his first NCAA Tournament after spending the previous three years at Georgetown and Arizona. "To have this No. 1 seed is a testament to how hard our guys have worked, and how well our coaches have kind of executed game plans throughout the year."
Drew said the early exit from the Big 12 Tournament could be a blessing for the Bears, who have also had Akinjo, Adam Flagler (13.4 ppg) and freshman Jeremy Sochan (8.8 ppg, 6.2 rebounds) miss games with injuries.
"Anytime you lose, it's a chance to hit the reset button," Drew said. "It refocuses everyone. Nobody likes the feeling of losing. From that, the players are going to practice harder, the coaches are going to be more dialed-in. I think we'll be ready to put our best foot forward come tournament time."
Norfolk State has won nine of its last 10 games, earning the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with a 72-57 win over Coppin State in Saturday's MEAC Tournament final after winning the league's regular-season title with a 12-2 record. Guard Joe Bryant Jr. leads the Spartans with a 16.8-point scoring average.
Ten years ago, the Spartans pulled off one of the biggest upsets in tournament history when they were the No. 15 seed and knocked off second-seeded Missouri, 86-84, in the first round. Baylor is 2-0 all-time against Norfolk, winning 86-58 on Nov. 13, 2009 in Waco and 92-51 five years later.
"Norfolk State is a team that's had tournament success before," Drew said. "In 2019 in the NIT, they beat Alabama. So, this is a team that's had postseason success. They've had a history of winning and doing well, especially the last nine years."
The East Region is considered the hardest of the four regions, with a field that includes second-seeded Kentucky (26-7), No. 3 Purdue (27-7), No. 4 UCLA (25-7) and fifth-seeded Saint Mary's (25-7).
"No matter what regional you look at, no matter what game you look at, that's a tough game," Drew said. "There's a reason, there's a lot of parity in college basketball. They call it March Madness for a reason. Sometimes, you look at the numbers, and 1-16, 2-15, 3-14, they look like a big difference, when us coaches know there's really not that big of a difference. So, survive and advance. You better be ready to go, or otherwise you're going home."
