ARLINGTON, Texas – This was not the same Justin Campbell that Baylor baseball faced just six days ago.
Oklahoma State's gas-throwing right-hander certainly lived up to his hype as the Big 12 Preseason Pitcher of the Year, striking out 10 and giving up just three hits in the ninth-ranked Cowboys' 11-1, run-rule victory over the eighth-seeded Bears (26-28) Thursday morning in an elimination game at the Big 12 Championship at Globe Life Field.
Last Friday, Campbell (9-2) was touched up for five runs on nine hits in five innings in a 9-5 OSU victory at Baylor Ballpark. Thursday, he was close to untouchable.
"He was a completely different guy," Baylor coach Steve Rodriguez said. "(On Friday), breaking ball was a little loopy, his fastball command wasn't where it was as of today. Today, he wouldn't let our hitters breathe. It was really impressive.
"He was throwing four different pitches for strikes . . . curveball was really sharp. And then, he had the ability to put it where he wanted with strikes, if he wanted to get a swing and miss. For today, it was pretty frustrating. At the same time, you've got to give credit where it's due. He came out there and earned everything he got."
The Bears were able to squeeze out a run against Campbell, albeit an unearned one. After OSU (37-19) scored on a Marcus Brown RBI single in the second, Jacob Schoenvogel beat out an infield single to the left side and went all the way around to third on a throwing error.
Alex Gonzales, who got a start at third base in place of Esteban Cardoza-Oquendo, made up for a second-inning error with an RBI groundout to short that scored Schoenvogel and tied it up at 1-1.
Jake Jackson (4-5), who got some help from a botched delayed steal to get out of the second inning, couldn't get out of the third. After back-to-back singles by Zach Ehrhard and Roc Riggio to lead off the inning, Griffin Doersching blasted a three-run homer to left that traveled 447 feet.
"The guy is really strong. He's going to be jumping off turnbuckles here pretty soon," Rodriguez said of the 6-4, 251-pound DH, a grad transfer from Northern Kentucky that has 12 home runs for the season. "We were throwing a lot of different pitches to him, and he got one that he was able to get a hold of."
But, Rodriguez said the three-run homer and 4-1 deficit wasn't the back-breaker for the Bears.
"The back-breaker was trying to get going offensively," he said. "I really liked our chances if we could get guys on base, get Campbell in the stretch. And we just couldn't get the offense going. (Down 4-1), that's nothing. But being able to keep it there, that was our goal. And we just weren't able to."
A parade of Baylor relievers wasn't able to keep the Cowboys down, as Grant Golomb, Matt Voelker, Adam Muirhead and Anderson Needham allowed a combined seven runs on 11 hits and three walks over the last four innings.
Riggio led off the sixth with a homer off Voelker, then OSU ended it when an RBI single by Jake Thompson got by leftfielder Cam Caley as the final two runs scored in the seventh.
Jared McKenzie, who was 0-for-7 with four strikeouts in the tournament, said it wasn't a matter of bouncing back after Wednesday's 4-2 opening-round loss to top-seeded TCU.
"Yesterday did hurt. TCU is a very beatable team, and we figured that out when we played them earlier in the year," McKenzie said. "And we just played Oklahoma State and got a win off them. We knew what they had. We were looking forward to that opportunity today. Campbell came out and just shoved and did his job on the mound, and we didn't really get a chance to do much from that."
Campbell, a two-time All-Big 12 first-team pick, went the distance and got the win. Jackson took the loss, giving up three earned runs on five hits and one walk in 2.1 innings.
OSU stays alive and will face the loser of the afternoon game between TCU and fifth-seeded Texas at 3:15 p.m. Friday.
"I think that anytime you get this feeling, it sucks," junior shortstop Jack Pineda said. "And it is a little bit different this year, knowing that we don't really have to watch the (NCAA selection) show on Monday. But, I guess everything is motivation in the failure."
THE RUNDOWN
ARLINGTON, Texas – No. 8 seed Baylor baseball (26-28) was defeated by run-rule against No. 4 seed Oklahoma State (37-19), 11-1, Thursday morning at Globe Life Field in Arlington.
The Bears were held in check by Cowboys' ace Justin Campbell, who registered 10 strikeouts in a complete game, seven-inning contest. BU's only three hits came from Antonio Valdez, Harrison Caley and Jacob Schoenvogel, who scored on Alex Gonzales' RBI groundout for the Bears' lone tally.
Following OSU's opening run in the bottom of the second inning, Baylor tied the ballgame at 1-1 when Schoenvogel wheeled around to an unoccupied third base after singling and advancing on an error. In the next at-bat, Gonzales put a ball in play to score the runner and pick up his 11th RBI of the season.
BU used five different pitchers, including Jake Jackson, Grant Golomb, Matt Voelker, Adam Muirhead and Anderson Needham, but struggled to slow down the potent Cowboys offense that scored runs in five of the seven innings played.
A three-run home run gave OSU the lead back in the third, and the Pokes added two more in the fourth to charge ahead 6-1. A pair of runs in the sixth preceded a three-spot in the seventh that resulted in the run-rule.
With the loss, Baylor was eliminated from the 2022 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship.

On allowing an early home run…
"Let's be honest, I couldn't be more proud of our pitching staff. And I know that is kind of weird to say when you kind of go through this. But, when you have starters go down and then you have bullpen guys kind of try to fill in the gaps. And them some of them go down. Pretty soon, you start to keep moving pieces, trying to fill those holes. And when you have guys going into roles that weren't really designed for them yet, just because of their experience, their opportunity, their youth, I have to sit back as a coach and look at them . . . they went out there, and they just battled."
On Campbell's outing…
"He was different. And I said this to somebody afterwards, we faced him five days ago, and he was a completely different guy. Today, he wouldn't let our hitters breathe, it was really impressive. He has that ability, he's an unbelievably talented kid. He's going to have a long career, it's going to be fun to watch him. For today, pretty frustrating. But at the same time, you've got to give credit where it's due. He came out there and earned everything he got."
