Bears down the Aggies, 4-2, to play in Sweet 16
By Jerry Hill
Baylor Bear Insider
Up a break on two of the remaining three matches in Saturday night's NCAA second-round showdown at the Hurd Tennis Center, 25th-ranked Texas A&M had a path to what would have been a huge upset of the third-seeded Baylor Bears.
But, Adrian Boitan shut down that path, rallying from an 0-2 third-set deficit to defeat 32nd-ranked Noah Schachter, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, and send the Bears (28-3) to the Round of 16 with a hard-fought 4-2 win over the former Big 12-rival Aggies (22-14).
"I just saw that we were actually in a position to lose, which I didn't even think about at the beginning of the match," said Boitan, who improved to 18-1 in dual-match play. "I just had to get up a little bit and just get it done, because that's what I do."
Boitan was at his best in the final game on Court 1, serving up two winners and a pair of aces down the middle that Schacter had no chance to even touch.
"Adrian is just such a competitor that, unfortunately, he felt like he could probably get away with losing the second set. His frustration got the best of him. But, when he looks around and sees, 'I have to win,' then he's going to win. That's the mark of a great champion like Adrian."
Baylor came out on fire in doubles, going up multiple breaks on every court. Third-ranked Finn Bass and Sven Lah rolled over the 14th-ranked duo of Schachter and Kenner Taylor on Court 1. With Boitan and Tadeas Paroulek up 5-1 at No. 3, ninth-ranked Matias Soto and Juampi Mazzuchi got the first point on the board with a 6-2 win over Stefan Storch and Austin Abbrat on Court 2.
"I thought we did a great job of getting on them early in doubles," Woodson said. "We played excellent doubles on all three courts. We were poised, we were ready, and we took it to them, which was great to see."
Woodson had a feeling the singles were going to be difficult, "because it's just a totally different match."
"I felt like (A&M) could go one of two ways," Woodson said. "They could pack it in and feel like, we can't win, or they could dig in and feel like, 'Hey, we could surprise them if they get tired, if they feel like they're the team that's supposed to win.' We allowed them to stay in it just long enough where every guy sunk their teeth into the match."
The Bears wasted no time getting the second point on the board, with Mazzuchi getting two early breaks in the second set and sweeping Abbrat in convincing fashion at No. 6, 6-2, 6-2. A&M answered with the only other straight-set win, with Guilio Perego taking care of Bass, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4.
Perot, who lost the first set at No. 2, came back to dominate the last two sets and defeat Soto, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, to knot the team match at 2-2. That's when things started swinging back Baylor's way, with both Boitan and Paroulek digging out of 0-2 holes.
The 58th-ranked Paroulek went back and forth with Luke Casper at No. 5, but won the last three games and hit a forehand approach-shot winner to pull out a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 win that put the Bears back on top, 3-2.
Lah was up 6-4, 3-6, 4-3 on Guido Marson at No. 3 and had a break point when Boitan finished his comeback at No. 1 for the clinching point.
"Adrian was struggling physically and did a phenomenal job when his back was against the wall," Woodson said. "(Paroulek) just never goes away against a guy who's lost like two times the whole season. And Sven was right there, break point to serve it out. If you had told me we would win it 4-2, with another match that we're about to serve it out, I'll take that and run in the Round of 32."
Back in the Round of 16 for the fourth-straight time, Baylor will host 18th-ranked Stanford (19-5) at 6 p.m. next Friday, May 13, with a trip to Champaign, Ill., and a quarterfinal berth on the line. The Cardinal upset 14th-seeded Harvard, 4-3, in a match that came down to a three-setter at No. 3 singles.
"They're one of the most talented teams in the country," Woodson said, "a team that has battled some injuries and some different things with their personnel. But, they're firing now, so we're going to have our hands full. We haven't played them (this year), but we know their players pretty well."
Boitan said the Bears have to step it up in the next round.
"We won, just because we're the better team," he said. "But, if we perform like this, we can't win the whole thing. There's no way. So, we have to do better."
WACO, Texas – The No. 3-ranked and national third-seeded Baylor defeated No. 25 Texas A&M, 4-2, on Saturday night at the Hurd Tennis Center to advance to the Super Regionals of the NCAA Tournament.
The Bears (28-3) took out the Aggies (22-14) with the win to advance to the Sweet 16 for the 20th time in program history.
BU improves its record in the NCAA Tournament to 61-21 and 33-1 when playing at home.
THE RUNDOWN
Baylor started off hot with a doubles clinch from courts one and two, in that order. Third-ranked Sven Lah and Finn Bass finished with a 6-3 win over Kenner Taylor and Noah Schachter on the top court. Court two followed suit, with ninth-ranked Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi and Matias Soto winning 6-3 over Stefan Storch and Austin Abbrat. Court three went unfinished at 5-1 with Adrian Boitan and Tadeas Paroulek up over Texas A&M's Raphael Perot and Giulio Perego.
In singles, Grassi Mazzuchi got it started off right with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Abbrat on court six. Up 2-0, the Aggies fought back. They won courts four and two, respectively, to tie it up at two-all. TAMU's Raphael Perot bested No. 36 Soto, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, on court two, with Giulio Perego besting Bass on court four at 6-4, 6-4.
Swinging the momentum was No. 58 Paroulek, winning 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 over Luke Casper on court five. With both No. 73 Lah and No. 5 Boitan close to finishing, it was a race to the clinch. Boitan roared back on the top court, winning 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 over No. 32 Schachter for the win for Baylor.
