STILLWATER, Okla. – Still feeling the effects of a frustrating overtime loss at home to 16th-ranked Oklahoma, the Baylor women weren't able to dig out of an early double-digit deficit in falling to Oklahoma State, 77-56, Saturday afternoon at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The difference was an OSU bench that produced 33 points, with Anna Gret Asi and Lior Garzon hitting a combined nine 3-pointers and scoring 15 and 14 points, respectively. Baylor's starters actually outscored the Cowgirls' starting five, 47-44.
"It really comes down to their guards, particularly, were better than our guards," said Baylor coach Nicki Collen, whose team fell to 16-8 overall and 7-5 in the league. "Outside of anything else, their guards got paint touches. . . . We were watching on that dribble penetration. We didn't do a good job of playing out, we didn't do a good job of sliding with them. We were not good defensively from tip to finish."
Oklahoma State was efficient at attacking all stages of Baylor's defense, knocking down nine 3-pointers and outscoring the Bears, 42-20, in the paint. Paced by five double-figure scorers, the Cowgirls (18-7, 8-5) swept the season series and moved up to third place in the league behind only 20th-ranked Texas (20-6, 11-2) and Oklahoma (19-4, 9-3).
While the Bears trailed 22-9 after the first quarter and never really recovered, Collen said it wasn't just the start, "I think it was the whole game."
"I think we played like a team that had a hangover from the tough loss against OU," she said. "And I thought Oklahoma State was the aggressor all night long. I though they got a piece of the paint whenever they wanted to. Even in the first half, we were 66% with a paint touch and 5% without a paint touch."
Trailing by 19 early in the second half, the Bears got seven defensive stops in the first five minutes of the third quarter and got within 48-36 on a three-point play by Caitlin Bickle, who recorded her fifth double-double of the year with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
But the Cowgirls responded with 10 unanswered points, including back-to-back 3-pointers by Asi and Garzon, and outscored Baylor, 13-2, over the last four minutes to stretch it back out to a 61-38 advantage going into the final period.
"We had opportunities to change the momentum in the third quarter," Collen said, "because we got some stops and got in transition. And then, just threw the ball out of bounds or threw it back to them. We had poor decision-making, and there's no amount of timeouts or TV timeouts that can change that."
Freshman Bella Fontleroy recorded her second-career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Sarah Andrews, the reigning Big 12 Player of the Week, hit three 3-pointers and scored in double figures for the 12th-straight game with 11, but also had six of the Bears' 19 turnovers.
Seeing her first action in conference play, 6-3 freshman Kyla Abraham had four points and two blocks in four minutes off the bench.
Taylen Collins had a double-double for OSU with 11 points and 13 rebounds, while Terryn Milton and Naomi Alnatas scored 14 and 13, respectively.
The margin of defeat matched Baylor's worst of the season (75-54 to Arizona) and was the Bears' worst in conference play since a 69-45 loss at Iowa State in 2010.
Baylor goes back on the road to face Kansas State (14-10, 3-8) at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan, Kan. The Wildcats lost the first meeting with the Bears, 69-48, in Waco and will play the 16th-ranked Sooners on Sunday.
