Bears look to extend their postseason run against the Buckeyes on Sunday
SOUTH BEND, Ind.– No. 23 Baylor Soccer extended its stay in the South Bend Regional, advancing to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Division I Soccer Championship. The Bears match up with Ohio State on Sunday, Nov. 23, with kickoff set for 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT at Alumni Soccer Stadium.
The Bears (14-4-4, 7-3-1 Big 12) are coming off a 1-0 upset victory over No. 4-seeded Wisconsin in the Round of 32, powered by a penalty kick drawn by Hannah Augustyn and converted by Tyler Isgrig, along with an exceptional defensive effort that secured their place in the Sweet Sixteen.
BU is also carrying momentum from a dominant 3-0 win over Texas State in the first round. Baylor's strong regular season earned the program a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament, and this advancement marks the fourth time the Bears have reached the final 16 teams competing for the national title.
The unseeded Buckeyes (10-4-6, 4-2-5 Big Ten) punched their ticket to the Round of 16 with a dramatic 1-0 upset over top-seeded No. 2 Notre Dame, netting the winner in the final seconds of double overtime on Thursday night.
Ohio State, ranked No. 9 nationally in goals-against average, opened its postseason run with a 2-0 victory over eighth-seeded Georgia. This marks the Buckeyes' second-straight appearance in the Sweet Sixteen and the sixth in program history.
This is the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Both teams feature exceptional backlines, with Baylor recording 12 shutouts this season, Ohio State posting 11, and neither side conceding a goal through the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament. In the RPI metric, the Bears hold the No. 17 ranking, while the Buckeyes sit at No. 38 through matches played on Nov. 10. The two programs now meet for the first time with a spot in the Elite Eight on the line.
This NCAA postseason run marks a noteworthy milestone for head coach Michelle Lenard, signifying her first NCAA Tournament appearance since taking charge of the Baylor program. Under Lenard's guidance, the Bears have posted the most successful campaign of her tenure, advancing to their deepest Big 12 and NCAA Tournament rounds since 2018.
With a win, the Bears would advance to the NCAA Championship quarterfinals and face the winner of Sunday's 11 a.m. CT matchup between second-seeded Georgetown and third-seeded Florida State.
Live stats for the match will be available online with updates provided on social media, and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
