Bears finish Players Era Tournament 2-1
LAS VEGAS – Baylor men's basketball showcased offensive firepower in a dominant 91-81 victory over San Diego State to cap off the Players Era Tournament on Tuesday night, 91-81.
Baylor (5-1) put together an all-around team effort with all seven Bears securing a bucket, five Bears in double-figures. The Bears outrebounded the Aztecs 36-29, including a 10-6 offensive clip. BU shot 53-percent from the floor with the help of a strong second-half from Obi Agbim who secured 13 of his 16 points in the final 20 minutes, while going four-from-eight from beyond the arc on the night.
Tounde Yessoufou led the Bears' offensive change with 18 points, shooting an efficient 7-14 from the field while contributing seven rebounds and two assists. Cameron Carr added 17 points on 5-11 shooting, while recording six rebounds and three assists.
Dan Skillings Jr. contributed 11 points along with eight rebounds and five steals, showcasing his two-way impact on the game. Isaac Williams IV chipped in 13 points off the bench in just 19 minutes.
Baylor's defense forced 10 turnovers and converted them into 12 points.
THE RUNDOWN
Michael Rataj got the night started in Sin City with a driving layup to put BU's first points on the board. However, a 10-0 SDSU run over a two-minute span would put Baylor trailing 10-5 after the first media timeout.
A three-point jumper by Williams would snap the Aztecs' streak and pick up some momentum for Baylor, with the Bears taking their first lead of the night 14-10 with the help of a 9-0 run.
The Aztecs weren't easily deterred, a back-and-forth battle ensued with five lead changes happening in a four-minute extent. With eight minutes left in the first half, the game sat tied 22-22.
The Bears kept the battle going with both teams putting up equal numbers, shooting 10-for-21 from the field at the under-four timeout.
A Carr dunk, something Baylor fans have become familiar with, put the Bears with largest lead of seven. Agbim found Rataj in the paint for BU to finish four-of-the-last-four from the field, 40-36, at the half.
The Bears started the second half slow, going one-for-seven from the field. Yessoufou was the first Bear to reach double-digits, having hit the mark in every game this season. An 8-0 run kept the Aztecs in the game and gave them back the lead at 52-50.
However, Williams grabbed four quick points while Agbim sank a three to put both Bears in double-figures. The Bears got hot, streaking on a 15-2 run that included a euro-step reverse layup from Williams to get the bench loud. On the defensive end, BU forced four turnovers on SDSU to give the Bears a 65-54 lead and hold the Aztecs to a scoring drought of five minutes with nine minutes left in the matchup.
Skillings Jr. reached double-figures to give the Bears their fourth player with 10-plus points. At the final media timeout of the night, BU found themselves with a 70-59 lead.
Baylor found itself with five Bears in double-figures, but a 7-0 run for the Aztecs started fighting back in the final two minutes of the game. However, it was too late for SDSU and Baylor came away with a 91-81 win.
