Bears turn in seventh-best defensive scoring mark, commit second-fewest fouls of Collen era
WACO, Texas – Opening with 14 consecutive points, Baylor women's basketball rolled past Grambling State 76-35 on Sunday afternoon at Foster Pavilion in the second of five straight games from the Banks of the Brazos.
Baylor poured in 24 first-quarter points and never allowed the Tigers back into the game, leading 37-10 at the half and pushing the advantage as large as 41 in the fourth. The Bears shot 29-for-57 from the floor at 51%, knocked down 8 of 23 triples and made 10 of 11 free throws in their second-highest shooting effort of the season.
Darianna Littlepage-Buggs anchored the Bears, finishing with 10 points and 16 rebounds, her third double-double of the season off a season-high rebounding total while adding two blocks and an assist. Her work on the glass powered Baylor to a 47-31 advantage on the boards and 13 second-chance points.
Guard Taliah Scott paced the Bears offensively with 17 points, including a trio of early 3-pointers that fueled Baylor's opening surge. She went 9-for-9 at the free-throw line and added three assists and a steal.
Kiersten Johnson added nine points and five blocks in just under 20 minutes of playing time while the Bears recorded 10 cumulative swats and kept the Tigers without a block, a first for a BU opponent since UNLV failed to stop a shot in Las Vegas 16 days ago.
Bella Fontleroy chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds while Jana Van Gytenbeek hit a season-high two 3-pointers.
Grambling State's Zaria Johnson paced the Tigers with 14 points, but they never got closer than the early minutes after being held without a field goal for more than five minutes to open the game.
The Bears also opened the game with 17:59 of foul-less basketball, ending the night with a season-low total of seven personal fouls, the second-lowest tally in the Nicki Collen era.
Off the bench, freshman Marcayla Johnson put four points together behind a seven-point, four-assist effort from Yuting Deng. Kiera Pemberton also recorded four more points on Sunday, matching sophomore Kayla Nelms and redshirt junior Kyla Abraham.
BU returns to Foster Pavilion on Wednesday night to host Southeastern Louisiana. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on ESPN+ and the Baylor Sports Media Network, and tickets are still available through the Baylor athletics ticket office.
