Bears could not complete the comeback, falling 4-1
WACO, Texas – After losing the doubles point and Marko Miladinovic tying things up for the Bears, Baylor men's tennis fell short to No. 1 TCU during the first round of the ITA National Indoor Championships at Hawkins Indoor Center Friday evening, 4-1.
THE RUNDOWN
Sticking with the same doubles lineup from the Ohio State match, Baylor (6-5) went head-to-head with TCU's (7-1) ranked doubles pair on Court One. On Court Two, the South African pair of Devin Dadenhorst and Luc Koenig started off hot with a 6-3 win.
On Court One, the No. 9 pair of Miladinovic and Oskar Brostrom Poulsen battled in a hard-fought contest before dropping in a 6-3 decision to the Horned Frog's No. 2 Pedro Vives and Lui Maxted. With the doubles point coming down to Court Three, the duo of Alexandru Chirita and Zsombor Velcz continued to fight before getting bested 6-4 and TCU taking the early lead.
Heading to singles, BU made some lineup changes switching Velcz and Koeing to Court Three and Four, respectively. The matchup was pretty even halfway through the first set with Miladinovic tying the match up with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 dub on Court Six.
On Court Three, No. 84 Velcz faced off with TCU's No. 9 Lui Maxted in a back and forth second set before falling 6-2, 7-5.
Even though they lost the first set, No. 37 Badenhorst, Koeing and Chirita came back in the second set to extend their matches on Courts One, Four and Five, respectively. In his third set, Koenig couldn't rebound, falling to No. 92 Duncan Chan 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 on Court Four.
Facing off against the Horned Frogs' No. 6 Pedro Vives, No. 85 Brostrom Poulsen battled until the end in a highly contested match before falling 7-6 (6), 7-5 on Court Two, with TCU clinching the win.
HEAR FROM HEAD COACH MICHAEL WOODSON
On resilience after winning four second sets…
"That's a positive for sure. We didn't do a great job in the doubles, and that carried into the singles, a slow start on a few courts. The goal is to always make the second set better than the first you know. So, if you take the first set you try to win more easily in the second. If it doesn't go your way, you try to get closer to winning the second set. For the most part that happened.
And we were able to build as the match wore on. I just think we got off to a little bit of a slow start and then you know of course we got down to our break on all three courts in the third set and that's not good enough. To big of a mountain to climb against a team like this."
On Marko's dominant win…
"That's the goal. You want to try to put a point on the board as fast as you possibly can. And so, 1-0 against the number one team in the country, that's one way traffic, that's exactly what you want. You can almost not do a better job. I'm really proud of him and I thought he found some stuff in the match against Ohio State, and he was able to carry that into the match today. It was good effort."
