Bears look to improve to 21-1 in Season Openers since 2004
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The 16th-ranked Baylor men's tennis team will open its 2026 season on Tuesday afternoon at the Hogan Tennis Center, against No. 6 San Diego at 2 p.m. CT.
The 2026 season marks the sixth under the helm of head coach Michael Woodson, boasting a dual-match record of 121-48 over that span, with six consecutive NCAA and ITA tournament berths.
BU is 20-1 in season openers since the 2004 national championship team and is looking to continue the winning streak. This is the first time since the 2013 slate that Baylor has opened the season in a true road match.
San Diego currently leads the all-time series record at 2-0. The Bears battle the Toreros for the first time in San Diego. The last time the two programs faced off was last season, when USD battled out a 4-3 victory against BU.
Baylor returned six from the 2024-25 roster, including Devin Badenhorst who led the team with a 22-17 record last season, 12-13 in dual matches.
In the ITA individual singles rankings following the fall season, Badenhorst landed at No. 8, while Connor Van Schalkwyk was named No. 17, Alexandru Chirita No. 44, freshman Drew Hedgecoe No. 95 and Zsombor Velcz at No. 108. The doubles pairing of Van Schalkwyk and Velcz holds the No. 78th ranking.
