
No. 10 EQ Drops Spring Big 12 Opener at No. 7 Fresno State

Bears couldn’t hold their lead through the second half
FRESNO, Calif. – The 10th-ranked Baylor Equestrian team fell to No. 7 Fresno State at the Student Horse Center on Friday afternoon, 11-9.
The Bears (2-5, 1-3 Big 12) led through the first half against the Bulldogs (7-3, 2-2 Big 12), but had trouble finishing the job in the Big 12 opener for the spring.
THE RUNDOWN
Starting off the meet in Fences, Caroline Muth rode to an 81 on RB for her exhibition. Madison Mitchell came first, scoring an 84 on Sid, which Fresno State's rider couldn't match, scoring a 79 for point Baylor. Emma Covarrubias scored an 80 on Axel but was upended by an 84. Juliette Earley brought up the rear, scoring a 78 on Wasco, but Fresno State took the point in the second half. Before the scoring rides, Annie Vorhies rode Blue in exhibition, scoring a 75.5. Lauren Reid scored an 80.5 on Bodhi to win her point. Lauren Jorgensen exited the ring scoring an 84.5 to take the point. After the meet, Mitchell was named MOP for Fences, her first this season in the event.
To start Horsemanship, Olive Holm had a 73.75 on Lucy 2 in her demo ride. Nadalee Vasquez started the competition rides with a 73.25 on Reece, her opponent eventually scoring a 67.5 after review for point BU. Taylor Smith came next, scoring a 63.5 on Flynn, but the Bulldogs took the point with a 74. Then it was Alexis Rutledge's turn, scoring a 74.75 on Chip, which couldn't be outdone by FS, who scored a 71.25. Before the scoring rides took place, Carley Rutledge scored a 67.5 on Whiskey in the second exhibition. Anna Thron started the second half for the Bears, scoring a 72.25 against FS. Gianna Pozzi rode Quinn and scored a 74.5 to beat out her Bulldog opponent.
At the half, the Bears were up 6-4 with a 3-2 decision in Fences and in Horsemanship.
Reining got started with a Bulldog rider, then it was Emily Moomaw's turn, who scored a 67 on Wagner after review, eventually upset by .75 points. Kalena Reynolds' score on Dale was first held for review but came up as a 64, which wasn't enough against her Bulldog competitor's 69.25. Sadie Peters came out to start the scoring rides and laid down a 68.75 to earn her point, the meet at a close 7-6 in the Bears' favor at this juncture. Once Riley Cachat scored her point on Dyson, she tied it at 9-9 overall. Isabella Hehr earned a score of 66.25 but couldn't get her point.
Fresno State rode first in Flat but was followed by Earley who scored a 70.5 in her ride on Muffin, eventually beat out by an 80. Lauren Jorgensen finished with a 67.5 on Bruell but fell to a 71.5 decision. When the scoring rides began, it was Lauren Stebbins to start it off; she scored a 66.5 on Donut, falling to her opponent. Madison Mitchell earned her point to tie the meet at 7-7, putting up a 76 on Capri. Lauren Reid rode to a 74.5 on Santo to earn her point, tying it up again at 8-8.
After staying neck-and-neck for a few points down the stretch, Baylor fell to a 11-9 decision against Fresno State.
