Bears fiery first half guides to first conference win
STILLWATER, Okla. – Baylor men's basketball had something to prove on Tuesday night at Gallagher-Iba Arena and dictated Oklahoma State on the road, earning its first conference win 94-79.
Baylor (11-5, 1-3) earned its 10th straight win in Stillwater while snapping Oklahoma State's (13-4, 1-3) 11-game home winning streak. A hot first half fueled BU to its 15-point margin of victory, tying the program record in a Big 12 road game. Baylor's 73.3-percent field goal percentage in the first half (22-30) was its highest ever in the first half in a Big 12 game.
Five of the seven Bears in rotation ended in double-figures with Tounde Yessoufou leading BU with 23 points on 11 made baskets from the field. Behind him was Michael Rataj (19 points), Cameron Carr (17 points), Obi Agbim (15 points) and Isaac Williams IV (14 points), all contributing to Baylor's dominant Big 12 win.
THE RUNDOWN
Baylor men's basketball took control from the jump, maintaining the lead for the entirety of the first half. BU found its rhythm early with six of the seven active Bears in rotation getting points on the board quickly.
A second-chance three-point jumper by Carr got the Bears rolling from behind the arc, with Baylor sinking nine threes in the first half, the most in the first 20 minutes against a Big 12 team since 2023.
Williams, an Oklahoma City, native, found his groove on his home soil, going nearly perfect in the first half and only missing one shot with 14 points.
By the end of the first half, four Bears sat in double-figures, guiding BU to a 57-39 lead, the biggest scoring margin by Baylor in conference play since 2020. Baylor shot a fiery 71-percent in the first half, 64-percent from the arc, to give Baylor the 57-point edge, entering the game averaging 59 points per game in the Big 12.
Baylor picked up right where it left off in the second half, with Agbim nailing a three to extend the lead deep. Agbim played the entire game for the Bears. But an 8-0 run by the Cowboys over a minute-and-half span at the 12-minute mark got the OSU crowd loud at Gallagher-Iba arena and gave OSU some momentum while still trailing, 72-61.
However, a steal turned to a slam dunk by Yessoufou silenced the crowd and broke the Cowboys streak. Oklahoma State kept pushing, but every attempt made by the Cowboys, Baylor was quick to respond on its end.
At the final four-minute timeout, both teams were in a lull in scoring for over three minutes but Yessoufou kept trecking, reaching the 20-point mark.
In the final two minutes, BU held an 89-72 lead and that was enough for the Bears to earn their first conference win of the season, 94-79.
