Bears compete in two matches on Saturday against Lamar
WACO, Texas – No. 16 Baylor men's tennis hosts a doubleheader on Saturday, welcoming Lamar for two matches with first serves at noon and 6 p.m. at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.
Baylor (0-1) is in search of its win of the season after dropping its season opener in a nail-biter against No. 8 San Diego 5-2. Lamar (0-2) dropped its first two matches 6-1 to both No. 7 Mississippi State and SMU.
The Bears have several players highlighted in the ITA rankings in singles, with junior Devin Badenhorst landing at No. 8, while Connor Van Schalkwyk was named No. 17, Alexandru Chirita No. 44, freshman Drew Hedgecoe No. 95 and Zsombor Velcz at No. 108. The doubles pairing of Van Schalkwyk and Velcz holds the No. 78th ranking.
The Cardinals currently hold no singles or doubles rankings.
The Green and Gold currently leads the all-time series record at 14-4, with BU earning the victory in the last 13 matchups. The two last faced off last season, where Baylor picked up the 7-0 sweep in its season opener. In doubles, the duos of Badenhorst/Velcz and Louis Bowden and Luc Koenig picked up dominant 6-1 wins on Courts One and Two, respectively.
In singles, Velcz won Court One 7-6, 6-3, while Bowden claimed the 6-1, 6-1 decision on Court Three and Chirita won his match on Court Four 6-0, 6-1.
Saturday's doubleheader also features fans' first chance to grab this season's team poster as well as there will be food trucks outside available to fans.
