Bears tied for 2nd, one off the lead, after opening round in Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. – Freshman Amelia Wan soared to the top of the leaderboard with a 6-under-par 66 in Sunday's opening round of the UCF Challenge presented by PDI and helped the Baylor women's golf team stay within one shot of seventh-ranked Auburn in the team standings.

As a team, the No. 21 Bears shot 7-under 281, leaving them tied with 18^th-ranked Mississippi State and just one shot behind Auburn in the 16-team tournament at Eagle Creek Golf Club.

"Today was a solid start to our spring season, and I was happy to see our entire team play well," Baylor head coach Jay Goble said. "All seven of our players in the event shot 73 or lower, which is very solid."

Wan, who came in averaging 73.4 strokes per round with a career low of 71, grabbed the early lead with three birdies in her first four holes and never let go. After her only blemish with a bogey on the par-4 9^th, the freshman from Newark, England, closed out with three birdies on the back nine and takes a two-shot lead into Monday's second round.

"Very proud of Amelia in shooting -6 today," Goble said. "She came back for the spring semester rejuvenated and ready to go. Excited for her spring to come."

Entrenched in the top five for most of the round, sophomore Malena Castro bogeyed two of her final four holes and is tied for 16^th on the leaderboard at 1-under 71. Illinois transfer Yurang Li carded a pair of birdies on the back nine and is tied with junior Charlotte Brook at even-par 72.

Senior Silje Ohma had a birdie on the par-4 14^th and is tied for 30^th at 1-over 73 with senior Bridget Boczar and first-semester Paloma Ibarra Ambia, who are playing as individuals.

Auburn's four scoring players combined for six birdies on the last three holes to climb past Baylor in the team standings at 8-under 280. Only four other teams shot under-par for the round, with 18^th-ranked Mississippi State tied with the Bears, 12^th-ranked UCF two shots back at 5-under 283 and Florida Gulf Coast and Penn State tied for fifth at 1-under 287.
