WACO, Texas – Baylor defeated Houston 82-66 on Tuesday night at Foster Pavilion, improving to 19-3 overall and 8-1 in Big 12 play.
The Bears led for all but the first moments of the game, finished shooting 52.5% (31-for-59) from the field and outscored Houston 46-18 in the paint. Baylor also generated 19 points off 16 Houston turnovers and posted a 41-25 advantage on the boards.
Darianna Littlepage-Buggs led all scorers with 25 points on 10-for-11 shooting and 5-for-6 at the line, her highest point total in conference play so far this season. She added eight rebounds and scored 12 points in the third quarter, including a stretch of 10 straight points for the Bears.
Bella Fontleroy recorded her first double-double of the season with 17 points and a team-high 12 rebounds, including five offensive boards.
Kyla Abraham tied her career high with 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting and added eight rebounds, while Marcayla Johnson tallied a career-best three assists in 16 minutes with four boards.
Baylor led 18-11 after the first quarter, building its advantage through 10 points in the paint. The Bears opened with baskets from Kiersten Johnson and Littlepage-Buggs and a three from Jana Van Gytenbeek to build an early 9-2 lead. Houston closed the gap to two points on a second-chance three from Kyndall Hunter, but Baylor answered as Fontleroy converted two free throws before hitting a three off a turnover.
The Bears extended the margin by outscoring Houston 18-8 in the second quarter to take a 36-19 halftime lead. Abraham secured two offensive rebounds early in the period, scoring a putback, and Scott connected on a three to push the advantage to 12. Baylor added scoring from Kayla Nelms and Littlepage-Buggs as Scott closed the half with her second three of the quarter.
Baylor opened the third quarter with a 9-0 run that created its largest lead of the night at 22 points, as Fontleroy hit a three and Van Gytenbeek followed with a jumper. Littlepage-Buggs scored repeatedly throughout the period, posting 12 points in the frame alone. Houston added two late baskets, but Baylor maintained an 18-point lead heading into the fourth.
Houston opened the fourth quarter with eight straight points and later narrowed the deficit to as few as nine points. Goryanova scored a fast-break layup and followed it with a steal on the next possession, putting her stamp on the evening to stop Houston's momentum.
Taliah Scott finished with 14 points, including the two second-quarter threes. Van Gytenbeek added eight points and seven assists, while Kiersten Johnson contributed four points and four rebounds.
Baylor's bench contributed 14 points, led by Abraham's 10.
The Bears are back on the road this weekend, facing the No. 22 West Virginia Mountaineers in Hope Coliseum on Sunday afternoon before seeing Cincinnati in Ohio on Feb. 4.
