DELOSS DODDS DAY 1 RESULTS
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Baylor freshman sprinter Success Oyibu won the 200-meter title Friday on the opening day of the DeLoss Dodds Invitational at Kansas State's Cliff Rovelto Indoor Track.
With national leader Tiriah Kelley held out of the 200 for the second-consecutive week, Oyibu won the last of five heats and placed first overall with a time of 24.48 in her collegiate debut as a first-semester freshman from Nigeria.
The Bears also picked up a pair of runner-up finishes from Molly Haywood in the pole vault and sophomore sprinter Abbas Ali in the men's 200 meters.
Haywood, who leads the nation and ranks sixth in the world with her winning mark of 15-0 at last week's Ted Nelson Invitational in College Station, missed three times at 14-10 after clearing 14-6 on her third and final attempt. Kansas junior Mason Meinershagen took first place in the World Athletics Bronze event with a season-best mark of 14-8.
Matching his indoor PR in the event (21.35), Ali won his heat and placed second overall in the 200 meters, edged by Air Force senior Jett Rose's 21.29 clocking. Tyler Honeyman placed seventh in 21.64, with fifth-year senior Laurenz Colbert finishing ninth in his season debut in 21.68.
With four events in the book, freshman Kingston Williams sits in sixth place in the seven-event heptathlon, recording PRs in the 60 meters (7.06), long jump (23-11 ½), shot put (34-7 ¾) and high jump (6-2). Going into Day 2, with the pole vault, 60-meter hurdles and 1,000 meters still left, Tayton Klein of Kansas is the leader with 3,278 points.
The men added two more top-five finishes, with freshman Landon Freeman fourth in the high jump (6-10 ½) and Amon Malakwen fifth in the 800 meters with an indoor PR of 1:49.84.
Sophomore Ruth Kimeli was one of five runners that broke the previous facility record in the 3,000 meters, placing fourth with a time of 9:16.02 that puts her in the No. 7 spot in the program's all-time performers list in the event.
Saturday's Day 2 action begins with the heptathlon at 10:30 a.m., the women's long jump at 1:45 p.m. and the women's 60-meter hurdles at 2:05. Live results are available at DELOSS DODDS INVITE.
