#21 Bears hold off host Wildcats en route to seventh-consecutive top-5 finish
ARIZONA THUNDERBIRD FINAL RESULTS
TUCSON, Ariz. – Overcoming a slow start that saw the Baylor women fall to as low as fifth place, the No. 21 Bears held off the host Arizona team to finish as the runner-up behind a stacked, top-ranked Stanford Cardinal in Tuesday's final round at the Arizona Thunderbird Intercollegiate.
Shooting a closing round of 10-over-par 298, Baylor had its seventh-consecutive top-five finish of the season and fourth in the top two at 19-over 883. Stanford, which boasts five top-25 players, ran away with the team title at 16-under 848.
"We did a solid job fighting adversity today," Baylor coach Jay Goble said. "We did not have our best stuff today, and at one point we had fallen to fifth place. For us to go out there today and fight for every shot is something I love to see."
Recording her second top-five individual finish of the year and ninth of her career, senior Silje Ohma shot 1-over 73 in Tuesday's final round that included an eagle, a triple-bogey and three birdies. She tied for fifth in the 80-player field at 3-under 213.
"Silje played a fantastic event, especially today, when she did not get off to a great start," Goble said. "She birdied the last hole to shoot 1-over, which was a great score having been 5-over through the first seven holes. And I believe she is getting her game on track."
Sophomore Malena Castro narrowly finished her second-straight top-10 finish, shooting 2-over 74 in the closing round and tying for 11th at 3-over 219. Back in the team lineup after a top-15 finish as an individual in the first tournament of the spring, senior Bridget Boczar posted her third-straight round of 2-over 74 to tie for 21st at 6-over 222.
Freshman Amelia Wan had a counting score in each of the three rounds and tied for 34th at 13-over 229. First-semester freshman Pamola Ibarra Ambia struggled with three rounds in the 80s in her first time in the lineup, while senior Mallory Matthews played as an individual and tied for 47th at 16-over 232.
The Bears will play closer to home for the Chevron Collegiate on Feb. 23-24 at Golf Club of Houston.
