WACO, Texas – Baylor men's basketball hosts top-25 ranked BYU on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at Foster Pavilion on ESPN2.
GAME NOTES
• Tuesday will be the return of former Baylor player Rob Wright III, who played his freshman season with BU.
• Wright holds the single-season (148) and single-game freshman assist record (13) at Baylor.
• Last season when Baylor played BYU, Wright scored the final 14-points in the second half to help Baylor get to overtime and combined with VJ Edgecombe to score the team's final 25 points overall in Provo (1/28/25).
• The last time the Cougars played in Waco, BU won 81-72 on Jan. 9, 2024.
• BU is coming off of going 1-1 in the past week, where it earned its third conference win vs. Colorado.
• Baylor went head-to-head with No. 7 Iowa State at Ames, with eight lead changes before falling 72-69.
• Baylor is shooting 45.5-percent from the field and averaging 73.0 points in its last five games versus 40.1-percent field goals and an average of 66.8 points in its first five games of the conference season.
• In its win versus Colorado, BU went up by 24 points at the half, the biggest halftime margin in a Big 12 game since 1/27/21 vs. Kansas State (54-26).
• Undefeated with halftime leads, Baylor has won 90-percent of its games (279-37) when leading at the half in the last 14 seasons and is 13-0 this season when taking the halftime advantage.
• The trio of Obi Agbim, Cameron Carr and Tounde Yessoufou has proved to be a force for Baylor as all three played all 40 minutes at Iowa State last week and combining for 56 of BU's 69 points.
• Against Colorado, the trio combined for 65 points and a 55-percent clip from the field as well as 12 of BU's 17 assists and 16 of 32 total rebounds.
• Cameron Carr was recognized on the Big 12 Starting Five for his performances against CU and ISU.
• Through two games, Carr played all but four minutes was fifth in the league in scoring with 43 points, averaging 21.5. Carr put up double-figures in both games, with 24 at #7 ISU, just four points shy of tying his career-best. His 24 points was a conference season-best, which contributed to tying his career-high in made threes (5) and three-field goal attempts (10).
• Cameron Carr and Tounde Yessoufou were named on Naismith Midseason Watch Lists, with Carr being recognized on the Jerry West Award and Yessoufou on the Julius Erving Award top-10.
• After a slow start in conference play, Obi Agbim has strung together five-consecutive double-digit scoring games, combining for 79 points and hitting 29-of-70 (.414) from the field in the last five games. Against the Buffaloes, Agbim scored a season-high 19 points, added six assists and had his third block of the season.
• Agbim ranks third in the Big 12 and 17th in the NCAA in assist/turnover ratio (3.36).
• In Big 12 play, BU has outrebounded its opponent in eight out of 11 conference games this season, averaging 34.9 rebounds per game and 11.1 offensive rebounds per game in the conference season.
SCOUTING THE COUGARS
• BYU sits at 17-6 overall and 5-5 in Big 12 play, still ranked in the AP Top 25 despite a recent skid including a loss to Houston. The Cougars started the season hot with a 16-1 record but have lost four of their last five games.
• The Cougars average 85.8 points per game (top 20 nationally) while allowing about 73.2 points. This offense is paced by standout performances from predicted top-two NBA Draft pick AJ Dybantsa, leading the nation in scoring with 24.0 ppg and high usage from guards like Robert Wright III at 17.3 ppg, and 5.0 apg.
LAST TIME VS. BYU
• Trailing by as many as 13 and down by 10 at halftime, 44-34, the Bears whittled away at the deficit and made it a one-possession game, 51-48, on a dunk by Josh Ojianwuna off a dish from VJ Edgecombe, who finished with 28 points, five assists, four rebounds and a block in 43 minutes.
• Robert Wright III got the Bears to overtime by scoring 14 of his 22 points in the last 5 ½ minutes of regulation to push the game to overtime.
• Taking control in the first minute of the five-minute OT period, BYU scored on a Trevin Knell layup off the tip and then went up five on a Dallin Hall 3-pointer. Baylor did manage to get it back to a one-point game on Edgecombe's sixth 3-pointer of the night, but the Cougars were 6-of-6 from the line over the last two minutes to seal the win.
• Wright had 22 points, six assists and four rebounds with only two turnovers in 38 minutes. Norchad Omier and Jayden Nunn scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, but both missed a pair of free throws at crucial times.
