PING ASU DAY 1 RESULTS
PHOENIX, Ariz. – Going toe-to-toe with one of the elite programs in the country, the 26th-ranked Baylor women's golf team had all four scoring golfers shoot below par and sit in second place after Monday's opening round in the PING ASU Invitational.
Second-ranked USC is atop the standings at 17-under-par 271, with the Bears eight strokes back at 9-under 279, which ties their best round of the season. Rounding out the top five, Cal State-Fullerton is third at 7-under 281, followed by the 23rd-ranked Arizona State host team at 6-under 282 and No. 14 UCLA at 3-under 285.
"Solid day for our team and really pleased to see our games trending in the right direction," Baylor head coach Jay Goble said.
Sophomore Malena Castro had a bogey-free round of 3-under 69 and is tied for eighth, three shots behind first-round leader Jasmine Koo of USC. Freshman Amelia Wan carded one of the tournament's four eagles on the day and is tied for 10th with senior Silje Ohma and junior transfer Yurang Li at 2-under 70.
"Malena played a bogey-free round today and stayed patient all day," Goble said. "She did not make her first birdie until the 12th hole, but again, she kept in her process and just played steady golf. Silje, Yurang and Amelia all played solid as well, and I know they feel like they left some out there. They will be ready to fight tomorrow for every shot."
Castro started the day with 11-consecutive pars and tied for the most pars for the opening round with 15. She rolled in birdies at the par-4 12th, par-5 15th and par-4 18th to shoot in the 60s for the seventh time this season.
Despite a bogey on the third hole, Wan's eagle on the par-4, 433-yard sixth left her just one shot off the lead at 3-under at the turn. Li was in the top five before a bogey on the closing hole, while Ohma overcame a slow start with birdies on two of her last four holes.
Senior Bridget Boczar and junior Charlotte Brook, playing as an individual, are tied for 50th at 3-over 75 on the par-72 layout at Papago Golf Club.
Paired with USC and Cal State-Fullerton for Tuesday's second round, Baylor will start on No. 1 with tee times between 11:25 a.m. and 12:01 p.m. CT, while Brook will tee off at 11:12 a.m. on No. 10.
