THE 'MO' DAY 1 RESULTS
Â
BRYAN, Texas – Back near the top of the leaderboard, Baylor sophomore Malena Castro shot 1-over-par 73 in Monday's opening round and is tied for fifth at the 22nd "Mo" Morial at Traditions Club.
Â
At 18-over 306 , the 24th-ranked Bears are tied for sixth in the 16-team tournament but only five shots behind 18-hole leader Tulsa (13-over, 301). Missouri and third-ranked Texas A&M are tied for second at 14-over, followed by Texas State and Louisiana Monroe at 17-over.
Â
"This is a challenging golf course, one that has hosted (NCAA) regional a couple times and even the national championship in 2011," Baylor coach Jay Goble said. "Par is a great score out here, and you have to grind all day. We will stay patient and put a high value on making pars."
Â
Castro, who's already had six top-10 finishes this season, tied for the most pars in the 84-player field with 15. She also birdied the par-5 fifth, with her only blemishes being bogeys at No. 4 and 12.
Â
"Malena played very solid," Goble said. "She hit a great shot all day. But more importantly, she put the ball in positions she could score from. That's the name of the game out here."
Â
Senior Bridget Boczar offset six bogeys with a birdie at No. 7 and the only eagle of the tournament at the par-5, 509-yard 15th, tying for 12th at 3-over 75. Back in the lineup for the first time in two months, Charlotte Brook had a birdie on each nine and is tied for 26th at 5-over 77,
Â
Silje Ohma was Baylor's other scoring golfer, shooting 9-over 81, with Yurang Li tied for 62nd at 10-over 82. Mallory Matthews, playing as an individual, had a pair of triple bogeys on the back nine and shot 89.
Â
Texas A&M's Vanessa Borovilos had a pair of birdies on the back nine and shot 1-under 71 to go into the second round with a one-shot lead over a trio of players.
Â
Live scoring for Tuesday's second round will be available at The "Mo" Morial.
