The Baylor women's golf team shot an opening-round 313, then lowered its score to 307 in the second round to stand in sixth at 620 after the first day of the Susie Maxwell-Berning Classic Monday at the 6,013-yard, par-72 Jimmie Austin Golf Club.
Sophomore Josefin Svenningsson single-handedly led the Bears' turnaround as she shot a 79 in the first round, then rebounded with an even-par 72 in the second round to stand in 10th at 151.
Sophomore Meredith Jones (79-77) and freshman Anna Rehnholm (77-79) are tied for 26th at 156, while senior Michaelyn Morgan (78-79) is one stroke behind and tied for 30th at 157. Senior Kelli McKandless (85-82=167) is tied for 67th, while sophomore Sherry Summers (82-80=162), who is competing as an individual, is tied for 44th.
Host Oklahoma (308-294=602) leads the tournament by six strokes over SMU (302-306=608). Baylor is not far out of third, trailing Kansas State (315-300=615) by five, Arkansas-Little Rock (313-305=618) by two and Texas Tech (310-309=619) by one.
OU's Lisa Meldrum (73-70=143) leads the individual race by two strokes over UALR's Linda Svensson (74-71=145) and three strokes over SMU's Laura Cross (71-75=146) and Kansas State's Christine Boucher (73-73=146).
The tournament concludes with the third and final round on Tuesday morning.
