Women's Golfers Extend Lead In Shootout

BOERNE, Texas - Baylor shot a team three-over-par 291 Friday and extended its lead to 15 strokes over second-place Michigan through two rounds of the 2005 Baylor-Tapatio Springs Shootout. The fifth annual collegiate women's golf tournament is being held at the Tapatio Springs Golf Resort in Boerne, Texas.

Baylor was led by junior Josefin Svenningsson, who turned in a tournament-best two-under 70 Friday and leads the individual field of 98 by three strokes with a two-round two-under 142. SMU sophomore Laura Cross matched Svenningsson's two-under 70 in the second round and stands tied for third at two-over 144 with Baylor junior Meredith Jones (73-73=146). Oklahoma freshman Heather Wright is second at one-over 145.

Trailing Baylor (295-291=586) and Michigan (301-300=601) in the team standings is SMU (314-296=610), 24 strokes back after shooting a second-round 296 Friday. Oklahoma stands fourth at 617 and Florida International and Texas Tech are tied in fifth place at 628. Rounding out the top 10 are UTEP (seventh place - 638), Arkansas-Little Rock and Wisconsin (eighth place tie - 639) and Eastern Michigan and Toledo (10th place tie - 642).

The field of 18 teams includes five schools ranked among the nation's Top 50 according to Golfstat.com (No. 24 Michigan, No. 29 SMU, No. 38 Baylor, No. 42 Oklahoma and No. 50 Texas Tech).

Baylor, which has never won a team title in the five-year history of the Baylor Shootout, has four golfers among the top 10 individuals through two rounds after all six Bears shot better second-round scores Friday. Freshman Sian Reddick shot a one-over-par 73 Friday and is fifth individually at three-over 147. Sophomore Anna Rehnholm is tied for ninth after carding a three-over 75 in the second round. Junior Sherry Summers, disqualified Thursday for failure to sign her first-round scorecard, shot a second-round 75. Freshman Stephanie Waters, competing as an individual, shot a seven-over 79 Friday and stands tied at 59th with a two-round 166.

The 2005 Baylor-Tapatio Springs Shootout concludes with a third and final round of 18 holes Saturday beginning at 7:30 a.m. CST at Tapatio Springs Golf Resort, a 6,007-yard, par 72 course located 20 miles northwest of San Antonio.
