WACO, Texas - The Baylor women's golf team earned its sixth straight NCAA Women's Golf Championships Regional appearance, the NCAA women's golf committee announced Monday. The Bears enter as the 16th seed at the Central Regional May 5-7 hosted by Texas Tech at the Jerry S. Rawls Course in Lubbock, Texas.
The top eight teams and two individuals in each of three 21-team regionals advance to the 2005 NCAA Women's Golf Championships finals May 17-20 at Sunriver Resort in Corvallis, Ore. The Bears earned the program's first-ever appearance in the championship round last year by finishing fifth at the Central Regional in Normal, Ill.
Three players return with NCAA Championships experience, including junior Josefin Svenningsson (Gislaved, Sweden) who finished in the top 20 last year. Junior Meredith Jones (Eugene, Ore.) and sophomore Anna Rehnholm (Karlskrona, Sweden) were also instrumental in last year's run at the title.
Baylor is coming off a third-place finish at the 2005 Big 12 Championships, tying the program's best finish in the conference. Svenningsson tied the best individual finish by a Bear by tying for sixth, while Rehnholm tied for eighth and freshman Sian Reddick (Folkestone, England) tied for 10th. By finishing in the top 10, Svenningsson, Rehnholm and Reddick earned All-Big 12 Tournament Team honors, the first time in Baylor history more than one player finished in the top 10.
Auburn, Arizona State, New Mexico, LSU and Wake Forest are the top five seeds in the Central Regional, while Texas, Missouri, Texas A&M and Texas Tech are the other Big 12 teams joining Baylor in the field.
The East Regional will be played at the University of Florida Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla., while the West Regional will be played at New Mexico State University Golf Course in Las Cruces, N.M.
