WACO, Texas - Sophomore Brittney Griner was named to the Associated Press' 2010-11 women's basketball preseason All-America team it was announced today. Griner, a 6-8 post, becomes Baylor's second AP €ˆpreseason All-America selection, joining Sophia Young, a 2005 pick.
Griner ranked No. 2 in the voting, receiving 36 votes from a 65-member national media panel. Connecticut's Maya Moore received all 40 votes to claim top honors. Others on the five-member list were fellow Big 12 Conference player Danielle Robinson of Oklahoma, Stanford's Nnemkadi Ogwumike and Jantel Lavender of Ohio State. Griner is the only sophomore listed as Moore, Lavender and Robinson are seniors and Ogwumike is a junior.
Griner set an NCAA blocked shot record as a freshman with 223 rejections. In addition, she recorded four dunks including two in one game. The Houston native averaged 18.4 points, 8.5 rebounds and 6.4 blocks a contest en route to attaining All-American status. She was named Freshman of the Year by the USBWA and was also selected as the Big 12 Conference's Freshman of the Year, Co-Defensive Player of the Year and to the All-Big 12 first team, All-Defensive team and All-Freshman team.
So far this season Griner has been named to four preseason All-America squads including the Associated Press, Sporting News, Lindy's and Athlon. She is also on the Wooden Award and Wade Trophy watch lists.
