COLUMBUS, Ind. - Baylor women's golf senior Hannah Burke carded a 74 and is tied for 11th place Thursday after 18 holes of the NCAA Central Regional at Otter Creek Golf Course.

The Lady Bears, which are making their 10th NCAA postseason appearance in 11 seasons, are 14th overall at 28-over 316. No. 2 Arizona State holds a two-shot lead with a score of 9-over 297. No. 5 USC (11-over 299), No. 8 Purdue (15-over 303), No. 31 Oregon (17-over 305) and No. 26 Oklahoma State (17-over 305) round out the top five. Oregon's Kendra Little and Purdue's Thea Hoffmeister share the individual lead after both shot 2-under 70 in the first round. Juliana Murcia of Arizona State was the only other player to post a sub-par round with a 1-under 71.

"This course is as hard (a course) as I've seen," Baylor head women's golf coach Sylvia Ferdon said. "The pins were in some tough places and we need to figure out a strategy for tomorrow."

As a team, Baylor recorded five birdies during the first round. Burke, who pared the first 10 holes Thursday, finished the day as the tournament leader with 16 first-round pars.

"We didn't recover from shots in the rough," Ferdon said. "We will try something different tomorrow to get their tee shots in the fairway. Our No. 2 and No.3 players had high scores again. A few shots here and there, we have a chance to be near one of those top-eight spots.

Lene Hafsten-Morch tied for 27th after a 5-over 77, including two birdies. Sophomore Jaclyn Jansen also carded two birdies to finish the first round tied for 79th at 10-over 82. Chelsey Cothran shot 11-over 83 and is tied for 86th, while freshman Melanie White is 120th at 21-over 93.

"I think we are trying too hard to force a low score," Ferdon said. "We need to make the right decisions because this is such a difficult course. I thought it this course would play to our advantage. If we can get our tee shots in play Friday, everything else will be ok."

Round two of the 2010 NCAA Central Regional is scheduled to begin with the first wave of golfers - including all five Lady Bears - at 7 a.m. CDT Friday and continue in 11-minute increments. Live scoring will be available at www.BaylorBears.com.
