Final Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic Results

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Playing in her first collegiate tournament, Baylor women's golf freshman Hayley Davis shot 2-under 214 to finish second Tuesday at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic.

The Lady Bears opened the Jay Goble era with a sixth-place finish, shooting 21-over 885 - four shots behind fifth-place Cal. UC Davis (9-over 873) claimed the Ptarmigan team title, two shots ahead of both Illinois and Colorado.

"I'm fairly pleased with how we played this week," Goble said. "I still feel like we left a lot of shots on the course. Now that we have the first tournament under our belts, we know which areas need improvement.

"It's time to get ready for the next one. If we are learning from our experiences each tournament, then we are getting better."

Davis followed her back-to-back sub-par rounds to open the tournament with a final-round 75, finishing three strokes behind the individual winner, Demi Runas of UC Davis. Runas (5-under 211), Davis (2-under 214) and Idaho's Kayla Mortellaro (1-under 215) were the only golfers to finish the tournament sub-par. All-told, Davis carded eight birdies.

"Hayley's an awesome golfer and she's good enough to win just about every tournament we're in, if she's on her game," Goble said. "She hit the ball well in the final round, but didn't have as many putts falling like Monday."

Senior Chelsey Cothran registered Baylor's lone sub-par final round Tuesday and tied for 17th overall at 6-over 222. Cothran carded a team-best nine birdies, including six in the final round.

Also making their career-first collegiate appearances, freshman Stani Schiavone (76-72-78=226) and senior Valerie Sternebeck (76-72-78=226) tied for 33rd and 38th, respectively. Senior Jaclyn Jansen bounced back from her second-round 82 with a final-round 74, finishing tied for 56th overall at 16-over 232.

"Chelsey was probably the one who left the most shots on the course after Monday," Goble said. "For her to shoot under-par in the final round - with the scores higher - was amazing. Jaclyn didn't strike the ball well this week, but she gutted it out Tuesday to shoot 74. She's going to figure it out; she's too good of a golfer. I expect her to get it going in the next few tournaments."

Baylor returns to the course Sept. 25-26 for the Branch Law Firm Dick Maguire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.
