NCAA West Regional Second-Round Results
ERIE, Colo. - Despite windy conditions and temperatures in the 40s, the 17th-ranked Baylor women's golf team jumped up five spots to fifth place Friday after the second round at the NCAA West Regional.
Baylor shot a second-round 293, tied for the second-lowest team score Friday, and is 17-over through 36 holes. Stanford owns a one-stroke lead over second-place LSU; North Carolina and UCLA are tied for third at 17-over. The Lady Bears are four strokes ahead of eighth-place California - the top eight teams after Saturday's final round will advance to the NCAA Championship later this month in Franklin, Tenn.
North Carolina's Catherine O'Donnell is 5-under and is one stroke ahead of second-place Austin Ernst of LSU (4-under). Stanford teammates Sydney Burlison (3-under) and Sally Watson (2-under) are third and fourth, respectively, while Baylor freshman Hayley Davis is fifth overall at 1-under.
"We made a pact Friday not to scoreboard-watch or check the scores online," first-year head coach Jay Goble said. "That mentality paid off for us. We were able to focus on our game and not worry about anyone else.
"With the wind and colder weather, I thought we played really well," Goble said. "We have an early start Saturday, but we'll have the same approach as we did today - just focus on ourselves and no one else."
Seniors Jaclyn Jansen and Valerie Sternebeck each fired a second-round 72 - the best score by a Baylor golfer Friday. Jansen is tied for 12th overall at 2-over 146, while Sternebeck is tied for 47th at 7-over 151.
Senior Chelsey Cothran and freshman Stani Schiavone are tied for 71st at 10-over 154; Schiavone shot a second-round 75 and Cothran shot a 76.
Play at the NCAA West Regional continues with the final round Saturday. Baylor - paired with UCLA and Texas Tech - will tee off No. 10 beginning at 9:36 a.m. CDT. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com.
