
Australia Closes Group D Play

WACO, Texas ÃÆ'Æ' ¢ÃƒÆ' ¢' ¬" Russia (3-0) handed Baylor women's basketball guard Kristy Wallace and the Emerging Opals (2-1) their first loss in Group D action at the 2017 World University Games late Tuesday night inside Gymnasium Heping Elementary School.
The teams were well-matched as Australia and Russia battled back-and-forth through 14 times and 11 lead changes. With five minutes left in the fourth quarter, it was a one-point contest, 49-48, but Russia closed well down the stretch, outscoring the Aussies, 14-10, to secure the win, 63-58.
Wallace, who has started every game at the World University Games this summer, turned in a balanced performance with nine points, seven rebounds and six assists. The senior averaged 6.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists in the three-game stretch.
The Emerging Opals will meet the United States in quarterfinal play next. The game is set for Friday at 4:30 a.m. (CT).
