Robert Griffin III had his "Heisman moment," when the Baylor quarterback threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Terrance Williams with eight seconds left in a 45-38 win over Oklahoma.
Almost eight years to the day after RG3's moment (Nov. 19, 2011), Yossiana Pressley had one of her own with a season high-tying 31 kills and career-best 24 digs in leading third-ranked Baylor volleyball to a five-set win over top-ranked Texas Wednesday night before a program-record crowd of 7,357 at the Ferrell Center.
"For Yossi to get some of those kills down the stretch, she was really having to paint the lines and hit the corners," said coach Ryan McGuyre, whose team improved to 22-1 overall and 12-1 in the Big 12 in a virtual tie with the Longhorns (19-3, 13-1). "For her to drop 31 kills on just a great, great team defensively just speaks to who she is.
"It's always a team effort, but I know how much our girls love her. She's got to be a top National Player of the Year candidate, for sure, and just playing so good on the biggest stage so far."
Pressley's numbers for her sixth double-double of the season were so mind-blowing that the junior outside hitter thought the Ferrell Center stat board was wrong.
"I looked up at the stats, and I was like, 'That's wrong. That is so wrong,''' she said of the 24 digs. "I thought that was maybe my errors. I was a little shocked."
It looked like Pressley's "moment" wasn't going to be enough when Texas came back from two sets down to knot the match, scoring the last four points to take the fourth set, 25-23.
McGuyre said the Bears got "redundant" at the end of the fourth set, when Pressley was blocked on back-to-back plays and then hit one out on match point.
"We needed to finish that off and take more risks," McGuyre said "The fifth set, we took risks, which really they weren't. They were just trusting."
With Pressley already at 74 swings through the first four sets, "we needed to see who was fresh." Freshman middle blocker Kara McGhee had three of her eight kills in a 4-0 run that helped the Bears jump out to an 8-4 lead, and Gia Milana, Shelly Stafford and Marieke van der Mark added kills to help Baylor close it out, 25-23, 25-23, 21-25, 25-23, 15-9.
"I feel like we proved that we have more than 'one player that can do stuff,''' Pressley said. "It was so big, because at that point we became unpredictable, like they didn't know where the ball was going. So, it put pressure on them."
Before the fifth set, assistant coach Jason Williams told the team that "everyone needs to take it to the next level."
"And I think we did that," said junior setter Hannah Lockin, who recorded her team-best 11th double-double of the season with 53 assists and 11 digs to go with three kills, two service aces and a block. "Everybody just stepped up their game. Yossi, Marieke, Shelley, Kara, Gia, everybody. All the back-row players just did amazing."
It was a historic night for Baylor, which snapped a 35-match losing streak to Texas and beat the Longhorns for the first time since Oct. 27, 2001, and just the third time ever (3-84). McGhee, who had eight kills and a team-high six blocks, was 4 months old the last time Baylor beat Texas.
"It was huge, more than I can even say," Lockin said. "I, at least, wanted it for the seniors. I know the rest of the team did. The seniors wanted it so bad. Just to know that we accomplished it for the seniors and everyone on the team . . . it's super awesome. And just to beat a team like Texas is a dream I've had since I was a little girl."
The crowd of 7,357 nearly doubled the previous attendance record (3,878) that was set earlier this season in a 3-0 sweep of Tennessee on Sept. 14 on "Pack the House" Night.
When Lockin came out for setters' warm-up, about an hour before the start of the match, there were "almost more people than we have at a regular game that were already there," Lockin said.
"And then just periodically noticing that there's a basketball crowd here. That was so exciting and definitely helped us get the win," she said.
The crowd seemed to affect the Longhorns, who had 16 service errors, including on set points in the second and fifth sets.
"When it's all said and done, the match is separated by a point and a half, and the crowd gave us more than a point and a half," McGuyre said. "We felt like their servers were feeling the pressure from the crowd. It also helped us come back from losing two in a row and push us through (the fifth set). Both teams were pretty fatigued out there in the fifth set."
Pressley admits that she was "on fumes" in the fifth set.
Milana had nine kills, four digs and a block, while Stafford, McGhee and van der Mark each had eight kills.
Texas had three players with double-digit kills, led by Logan Eggleston with 18 kills, 12 digs and four blocks.
Now a half game behind Texas in the Big 12 standings, Baylor can win a share of its first conference title with road wins at Kansas State Saturday and West Virginia on Tuesday and TCU next Saturday, Nov. 30, at the Ferrell Center.
"We can't cherish it too long," McGuyre said. "We have three big matches left in conference. If we take care of business, we get to at least share a Big 12 championship. In volleyball, that's a pretty big deal because this is a good conference."
THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas – No. 3 Baylor volleyball (22-1, 12-1 Big 12) used a career double-double from junior Yossiana Pressley and a record crowd of 7,357 fans to upend top-ranked Texas (19-3, 13-1 Big 12) Wednesday night at the Ferrell Center, 25-23, 25-23, 21-25, 25-23, 15-9.
Pressley matched a season-high 31 kills and posted a career-best 24 digs to lead the way, followed by junior Hannah Lockin's 11th double-double with 53 assists and 11 digs.
Defensively, freshman Kara McGhee posted a team-high six blocks while senior Tara Wulf totaled 22 digs in the win.
Texas held an early 9-7 lead in set one, but the Bears quickly went on a 5-0 run to take the 12-9 lead off a Pressley kill. Texas tied it up at 20-20, but Pressley's 10 kills proved to be too much as the Bears took the opener, 25-23.
Baylor started slow in the second set and called timeout after UT took a 12-8 lead. The Bears clawed their way back and went up 23-20 after a Lockin and McGhee block. Lockin put down a kill for the 24-22 lead, and a Texas service error gave BU the 2-0 advantage with another 25-23 win.
BU's offense stalled in the third set, hitting .091 for 11 kills with eight errors. The Longhorns led by as many as seven en route to the 25-21 win.
A Texas kill gave the Longhorns a 12-8 lead in the fourth set, but BU used a kill from senior Gia Milana to lead 19-18. Two straight kills from Marieke van der Mark gave the Bears a 22-20 lead, but the Longhorns forced a fifth set with a 5-1 run for the 25-23 win.
In the fifth set, the Bears started hot with 3-0 and 8-4 leads. BU used a Milana kill to go up 13-7, and a UT service error ended the match for the Baylor win, 15-9.
