Senior forward among 15 student-athletes up for NPOY and Wooden All-America Teams
WACO, Texas – Baylor senior forward NaLyssa Smith earned a spot on the 2022 National Ballot for the John R. Wooden Award presented by Wendy's, the Los Angeles Athletic Club announced Saturday. Smith joins 14 other college basketball elites who are candidates for the Wooden Award All-American Team and Wooden Award Trophy.
The Wooden Award Trophy recognizes the most outstanding college basketball player in the United States. Brittney Griner was a two-time winner of the trophy in 2012 and 2013, and six Bears have landed nine All-America selections from the John Wooden Award in its history, including Smith who received All-America honors last season.
Smith has been the picture of consistency for the Bears this season with 20 double-doubles, which ties her for second in Baylor history and ranks fifth nationally. She is ninth in the country with 21.8 points per game and 11.7 rebounds per game.
The reigning Wade Trophy and Katrina McClain Award winner has received the Big 12 Player of the Week honor three times this season in addition to being named to the McClain Award Top 10 and the Naismith Midseason Watch List as well as a Naismith Defensive Player of the Year semifinalist.
Voting will take place from March 15th to March 22nd, and voters take into consideration a player's entire season of play, as well as the opening rounds of the NCAA Tournament. The finalists for the 2022 Wooden Award presented by Wendy's will be announced on March 30th.
