Bears Sweep Golden Hurricanes 4-0
TULSA, Okla. – Coming off its ITA Indoor Championship appearance, No. 18 Baylor men's tennis began the week with a dominant performance over No. 46 Tulsa at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon, taking down the Golden Hurricanes 4-0.
The Bears (8-6) improve their all-time record to 15-3 against Tulsa (6-7) and have won the past eight straight meetings.
THE RUNDOWN
In doubles on Court Three, the lineup altered slightly and entered Louis Bowden to play with Zsombor Velcz for the first time this season. The two didn't lack chemistry however, taking a quick 4-2 lead while the other two courts were knotted 3-3.
Moving through doubles play, the 12th ranked duo of Marko Miladinovic and Oskar Brostrom Poulsen were unable to hold their court and fell 6-3. On Court Two, Devin Badenhorst and Luc Koenig held their own and moved to 7-1 on the season as a duo, taking down their opponents 6-4. Coming down to Court Three of Bowden/Velcz, the Bears capitalized and took the doubles point with a 6-4 win.
In singles, Bowden continued his dominant momentum and wasted no efforts, taking the first set with a bagel 6-0 in the first 20 minutes of singles play. Badenhorst, Alexandru Chirita and Miladinovic would go on and win their first sets to give the Bears energy heading into the second.
Moving on in the second set, Bowden continued his dominant pace, never breaking throughout his entire match, and put the second point on the board for the Bears with a 6-0, 6-2 win. Right behind Bowden was Badenhorst, who brings his season record back to even at 6-6 on Court One with a 6-4, 6-4 victory. Needing only one more point to sweep the Golden Hurricanes, Chirita was nearing the end of his match. On match point, Chirita took a body shot to the chest and returned it to clinch the Sunday sweep for Baylor, 6-4, 6-2.
On Court Two, Brostrom Poulsen fell in his first set 6-2 and was tied 2-2 in the second before going unfinished. On Court Three, Velcz lacked momentum in his first set, 6-1, but took back the second set 6-3 before going unfinished. Miladinovic on Court Six was slightly trailing 3-2 in the second before concluding the match unfinished.
HEAR FROM HEAD COACH MICHAEL WOODSON
"Really solid performance today. I thought we came out a little bit trying to play too well in the doubles on all three courts. We needed to be more solid, disciplined and kind of be more level tennis. We didn't really do that, but we were able to get a key break at the end of Court Two. On Court Three, we broke and got broken back and then broke again. They did a good job of finishing off. We lost a couple of key points on One, but it really felt like it was about the same on One, Two and Three. We were able to take the doubles point, we really talked to the guys saying, 'Listen, we just have to be a little bit more solid, so don't try to play too well with your tennis, but bring your competitive level up.'
"I give a ton of credit to the guys for coming out right away. I think out outside of Zsombor, who got off to a little bit of a slow start, everybody really jumped on top of their opponents. We were able to get some leads on three or four courts. When you can continue to stretch those leads and allow the guys who are in tighter matches to breathe a bit and work their way back in. I give Zsombor and Oskar a ton of credit on not letting their opponent get on top of them early in the second. To run away with three matches like we did and being in control in the other ones is a great place.
"[Tulsa's] a tough team to beat here. They're ranked relatively high for a reason. They've got some signature wins already and they're not easy to play. It was good to get out of here with a clean 4-0 and head back home."
WHAT'S NEXT
The Bears return home and prepare for their first outdoor match of season on Saturday, March 1, in a double-header against UTRGV and No. 20 Illinois at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m at the Hurd Tennis Center.
