Six second set wins guides Bears to victory
SALT LAKE CITY – No. 15 Baylor men's tennis bounced back after a doubles loss, taking four singles wins to claim a 4-2 win against Utah at George S. Eccles Tennis Center on Thursday evening.
Baylor (16-8, 2-1) battled it out against No. 50 Utah (13-7, 2-2) in a three-and-half-hour match. Six second set wins proved to be the extra edge for the Bears to gain a conference road win.
THE RUNDOWN
Out of the gate in doubles, it seemed that the match would be a battle. Midway through, no courts maintained a lead larger than one game. Creeping towards the final points, all three courts held a tight 5-5 score.
No. 17 ranked duo of Oskar Brostrom Poulsen and Marko Miladinovic jumped forward with a lead, winning Court One 7-5. On Court Three, the Bear duo of Louis Bowden and Zsombor Velcz couldn't hold on, dropping 7-5. It all came down to Court Two with No. 80 Devin Badenhorst and Luc Koenig, whose match was forced into a tiebreaker. At the tiebreaker, the Utes took the momentum, taking the doubles point 7-6(2).
Moving to singles, Badenhorst didn't let his doubles loss stall him for long as he took a quick 4-1 lead on Court One. The 44th ranked singles player kept at it, winning the first set 6-3. Following behind him in quick fashion was Brostrom Poulsen, claiming his first set on Court Two 6-1. Velcz pointedly kept the momentum up for the Bears, taking his first set 6-4 on Court Three.
The three Bears on the top courts held their lead for the entirety of the match as all three won their second sets 6-3 to put the Bears with a big lead 3-1.
Coming down to the bottom courts, Alexandru Chirita, Bowden and Miladinovic all redeemed from a first set loss and took their second sets. Forcing third sets, the Bears began to battle to the next level. Chirita took his opponent back-and-forth, eventually forcing a third set tiebreaker. However, his Utah opponent was able to hold on a little longer, taking down Chirita 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(3).
It all came down to Courts Five and Six with Bowden and Miladinovic, both in their third sets. Both Bears jumped to an early lead in the third, but it was Miladinovic that came away with the clincher 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 to give the Bears the 4-2 win.
Bowden was nearly there to give Baylor the dub, leaving his match unfinished 6-4, 2-6, 3-5.
HEAR FROM HEAD COACH MICHAEL WOODSON
"The conditions are not easy here," said head coach Michael Woodson. "We've been here a couple of days and I feel like we were feeling pretty good going into the match, but there was quite a bit of wind to go along with the altitude, so tough conditions. I thought Utah came out pretty strong in doubles. We were right there, but at the same time, we couldn't convert in some key moments. Obviously as it wore on, I think we had 11 break points in three doubles and didn't get any of them and then dropped our serve on a deuce point. Heck of an effort from one doubles to come back from a breakdown and to actually win. We had some chances at two, but that's how it goes. You get to a tie breaker and it's who executes better, and they executed much better than us.
Going into singles, it just got hard. Credit to Devin, Oskar and Zsombor, they just jumped right on their opponents and did a great job. Never let up and put points on the board fast. Ultimately, I think that won us the match. On four, five and six, just very slow starts. Credit to the opponents, they played more confidently than we did. Fortunately for us, we won six second sets. That's a really good effort to not go away and keep our hands on the fire. When you go into a third, it gets hard. Alex had a back-and-forth match where he just lost it in the end. Fortunately, Marko and Louis had built leads. Marko was able to serve it out and obviously Louis was two points away from winning it 5-3.
We fight. That's one thing that we do. We could've probably made our lives a little bit easier today, but this is a tough team and especially at home. Anytime you can get a win in these conditions, you take it and run"
