PRAIRIE VIEW A&M RECAP
The Bears were all over the Panthers from the get-go. Playing through, every single court belonged to Baylor through the entirety of the match. Freshmen doubles team of Imran Daniel Hazli and Luis Jose Nakamine were the first duo to get a win, taking down their opponents 6-1. Louis Bowden and Justin Braverman were right behind with a 6-2 win on Court Three, clinching the doubles point. Quintan Van Wijk and Alexandru Chirita carried the momentum and earned the third BU doubles match 6-3.
In singles, the Bears remained dominant over the Panthers, not allowing them to more than four games won in a set. Baylor swept through singles quick and efficient with the match only taking one hour and forty-five minutes and four Bears garnering bagels with 6-0 set wins.
No. 36 Badenhorst was the first Bear to put a point on the board, efficiently taking down his opponent 6-0, 6-1. Van Wijk was next, earning a dominant 6-2, 6-0 victory.
Up 3-0, the Bears then went on a tear with the next four courts winning in mere minutes of each other. The two freshmen of Nakamine and Daniel Hazli clinched their matches back-to-back, with Nakamine taking a 6-0, 6-3 win and Daniel Hazli garnering a 6-2, 6-2 win. The senior Justin Braverman grabbed the Bears' sixth point of the match at 6-0, 6-2 in what could be one of his final regular season matches played in his career. Koenig was the final Baylor player to earn a win, taking down his opponent on Court Two 6-4, 6-2.
FROM HEAD COACH MICHAEL WOODSON
"We took care of business. I think that's the bright spot. As a coach, I think you can always pick on things that you could do a little bit better. I thought it was interesting. We put ourselves into some tough positions in doubles on our serve games. I think even at three doubles; we might have been 40-love down serving twice or more. We played really well from those points forward, but as a coach, you're wondering why we're getting into those positions. So, I really was a little frustrated with getting down in a bunch of serve games, and just felt a lack of intent and focus in those situations.
"But then when our back got against the wall, we did a good job. We were able to get ahead and be in a position to win on all three doubles courts. For the most part, we took that into singles. I mean, Oklahoma State's a very well coached team. They're talented. I know they haven't had a ton of success this year, but they're better than their record for sure. A few guys came out and really showed that. For us, I thought the captains, the seniors, set the tone early, and a few other guys just picked up on their momentum. Yeah, it wasn't perfect, but we got the job done."
On the team's six-match winning streak…
"Yeah, we're relaxing. I think they're becoming more professional, in general, as a team, and they're confident, which is great to see. When things get hard, they back themselves, and that's the mark of a team that's won quite a bit and won quite a bit lately. So, yeah, we're excited. I think we're playing better and better and trying to peak at the right time."
WHAT'S NEXT
Baylor will host No. 67 Texas Tech at the Hurd on Thursday night at 6 p.m. for the final regular season home match and Senior Night before heading north on I-35 for a showdown against No. 2 TCU in Fort Worth on Sunday at 1 p.m. to round out the regular season.
