Bears get their first back-to-back wins in conference play
WACO, Texas – Baylor was firing on all cylinders to start Wednesday's matchup, igniting their first win streak in conference play this season and sealing a dominant performance 86-67 over Colorado.
Baylor (13-9, 3-7), got its revenge for last year's close ending with a resilient defensive outing, holding Colorado (13-10, 3-7) to eight field goals while forcing nine turnovers to total just 21 points in the first half, the lowest by any power four opponent this season. The Bears went on a 22-7 tear before the break to put them at a 24 point advantage at half that Colorado was never able to chip away at.
For the second game in a row, the Bears' charge was led by the trio of Obi Agbim and Cameron Carr with 19 points a piece and Tounde Yessoufou with 27 of his own, just one point shy of his career-best. The triumvirate combined for 65 points tonight on 55-percent shooting.
With their promising first 20-minute outing being the deciding factor, BU remains undefeated when having an advantage at the break.
Leading for 38:10, Baylor capitalized on every second-chance opportunity, scoring 13 second chance points while also turning Colorado turnovers into 15 points, to go into another top-10 matchup with a win.
THE RUNDOWN
Colorado opened the scoring with a quick layup, but Agbim responded by accounting for the Bears' first five points with a triple and a jumper. A few timely defensive stops paired with buckets from Yessoufou and Caden Powell, helped Baylor jump out to an early 13-4 lead.
Baylor remained dominant on the defensive end, holding the Buffs to just 1-for-11 shooting over a four-and-a-half-minute stretch. On the other end, Yessoufou snapped a scoring drought for the Bears by drilling a three from beyond the arc.
Both teams went cold for a stretch before another Yessoufou triple and a pair at the line from Carr preserved the Bears' early margin. The duo then electrified Foster Pavilion with an alley-oop finish.
Keeping the crowd roaring, Carr and Agbim knocked down back-to-back threes to push BU ahead 39-16. Carr capped the opening half with eight straight points, before Isaac Williams IV attacked the rim to send the Bears into the break up 45-21, Baylor's largest halftime margin against a high-major opponent this season. Defensively, the Bears limited the Buffaloes to just eight made field goals in the first half.
The Buffaloes made an early push out of halftime, connecting on their second and third threes of the night, but Carr and Agbim responded to steady the Bears. The offensive pace stayed high midway through the half, as BU went four-for-four from the field while CU followed close behind at three-for-three during the same stretch.
Baylor extended its advantage with a 9-0 run over a four-minute stretch, holding the Buffaloes scoreless on six straight attempts. James Nnaji put the finishing touch on the run with a dunk.
The contest stalled late as Baylor went nearly three minutes without a field goal, scoring only from the free-throw line, before Carr and Michael Rataj jump-started the offense to keep the Bears comfortably in control, even as Colorado caught fire by shooting 5-for-5 from the floor.
To wrap up the night, the Bears went four of their last five from the field to seal their second conference win in a row 86-67.
