With or without senior guard Makai Mason, who's nursing a bruised right foot, the Baylor Bears (15-7, 6-3) have to get off to a better start against league-leading Kansas State (17-5, 7-2) in Saturday's 5 p.m. game at the Ferrell Center.
Mason scored a season-low five points and played just four minutes in the second half of Wednesday's 84-72 loss at Texas, snapping the Bears' six-game winning streak.
While saying that hopefully Mason is better than he was on Wednesday, Baylor coach Scott Drew added, "If he can't go, he won't go."
In the game against Texas, the Longhorns came out on fire and jumped out to a 45-30 halftime lead, with Baylor never able to dig out of that early hole.
"I don't think there's a specific reason why we didn't come out super-hot," freshman guard Jared Butler said, "but they did come out fast and we didn't respond. We know this is a big game, and we're playing at home, so those factors can contribute to us coming out fast, for sure."
Kansas was picked to win its 15th consecutive Big 12 regular-season title, but the 13th-ranked Jayhawks (17-5, 6-4) lost 74-67 at Kansas State on Tuesday and have dropped three of their last four to fall into a tie for fourth in the league standings with No. 18 Texas Tech.
Picked second in the preseason coaches' poll, K-State hasrisen to the top since the return of 6-10 senior forward Dean Wade (14.1 ppg, 6.8 rebounds), who missed six games with a foot injury.
"First, his size at 6-10, somebody that can play inside-outside, it's a tough matchup because of his versatility," Drew said of Wade. "Quite frankly, he's somebody that if he didn't get injured last year, he probably would have been in the NBA. A lot of people thought he would be a first-round pick. (Senior guard) Barry Brown's another one that a lot of people think belongs in the NBA. So, when you've got two NBA players that are seniors, you're pretty good."
K-State has reeled off seven straight wins in Big 12 play after an 0-2 start, the Wildcats' lone blemish over the last month being a 65-53 loss at Texas A&M in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.
"Besides the A&M game, they've been top-5 in the country the way they've been playing," Drew said. "This is a team that can win a national championship, this is a team that can win a Big 12 title. So, it's a great opportunity for us, because we feel like we can compete with anybody in the country when we play well, and it's on our home court."
After giving up a combined 39 points to Texas' backcourt duo of Kerwin Roach III and Matt Coleman II, Baylor's guards have to do a better job defending Brown (15.5 ppg), Kamau Stokes (9.8) and Xavier Sneed (9.8).
Butler said "that's a point of emphasis, for sure."
"This is another real athletic, real explosive, highly skilled group," Drew said of the K-State guards. "The big thing is when you get beat, the tendency is to play harder. But, the tendency needs to be play smarter. When we played against (TCU's) Alex Robinson the second time, we were a lot better-equipped to defend him. Hopefully, we learned some lessons against the Texas guards that can apply to Kansas State."
Despite being undersized since losing 6-9 sophomore center Tristan Clark to a season-ending injury, the Bears lead the Big 12 and rank 20th nationally in rebounding margin (plus-6.5). But, Baylor was outrebounded 17-10 in the first half against Texas and finished with a 29-29 tie on the boards.
"Texas definitely punched first and we didn't respond the way we wanted to," 6-8 junior forward Freddie Gillespie said. "But, our games before Texas showed that we're more than capable of rebounding the basketball. Seeing that teams are gunning for us for that rebounding spot . . . we have to make sure we're not so relaxed and be a better rebounding team."
Watching film from the last game, Drew said some of the rebounds "went over our head or their length came into effect."
"Offensively, we need to do better. Hopefully, our effort will be there. You can't always control the bounce of the rebound, but you can control of going in there and playing percentages of where it's coming off. We've got to do a better job of that. And if we do that, we'll live with the consequences."
After Saturday's game, the Bears will have another quick turnaround with a "Big Monday" matchup against Oklahoma (15-8, 3-7) at 8 p.m. Monday at the Ferrell Center. The Sooners, who have lost three in a row and five of their last seven, host Texas Tech on Saturday.
One thing to watch on Saturday is whether 6-foot-5 sophomore forward Mark Vital wins the opening tip against the 6-10 Wade or 6-9 Makol Mawien. Even with a distinct size disadvantage, Vital has won the opening tip several times, including in Wednesday's game when he went up against 6-10 freshman Jaxson Hayes.
In honor of Saturday being Taurean Prince Night, Drew answered a question about Vital being able to win the tip in true TP fashion.
"It's very simple. The official tosses up the ball, Mark jumps quicker, taps it to our team," Drew said before busting out in laughter. Three years ago, Prince gave a similar answer to a question about how Yale outrebounded the Bears in an NCAA Tournament game.
"That time, we didn't have Makai on our side, now we do," Drew said, referring to Mason scoring 31 in that game before transferring to Baylor this summer. "That's the only thing I take away from that that I like. Hopefully, we get a healthy Makai."
