
No. 15 WBB Drops Conference Opener to Texas Tech, 61-60

WACO, Texas – Yuting Deng scored 22 points, but it wasn't enough as Baylor dropped its Big 12 opener 61-60 to Texas Tech on Sunday afternoon at Foster Pavilion.
Both teams started scoreless for the first two minutes before Darianna Littlepage-Buggs put BU on the board. Texas Tech immediately responded as the squads traded field goals, but the Red Raiders earned two layups and one jumper while Deng posted a jumper for the Bears.
A 2:07 scoring drought stumped the Bears until Jana Van Gytenbeek found the game's first triple to pull BU within five and tie her career-long streak of seven games in a row with a three at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, both teams were again held scoreless for the opening two minutes before Tech broke through with a three-pointer. Marcayla Johnson quickly responded for the Bears, converting a layup to answer.
Deng added momentum with a steal, layup and jumper to bring the Bears within four. Baylor continued on an 11-0 run to take the lead for the second time in the contest. Van Gytenbeek added another basket from beyond the arc, and the Bears headed into half up 27-25.
After the break, Texas Tech briefly stole back the lead knocking down a three on the opening possession, but Littlepage-Buggs snagged it right back with a pair of layups. The squads traded baskets before Texas Tech tied the game at 34-all. Littlepage-Buggs converted two free throws to give the Bears the lead, but Deng pulled Baylor ahead by five knocking down her first triple of the game. The Bears led 43-39 heading into the fourth quarter.
Opening the final quarter was Johnson, posting a layup for the Bears. Texas Tech earned five unanswered points, but an and-one from beyond the arc from Deng made the Foster Pavilion crowd electric.
Deng hit her third three of the night to tie her season high and knot the contest at 55. The teams traded field goals, but Deng struck again hitting her fourth three, which tied her career high, with 52 seconds remaining to give Baylor a 60-57 lead.
In the final minute, Bailey Maupin hit two free throws with three seconds left to give Texas Tech the winning margin. The Bears were unable to earn a basket in the final seconds.
Deng shot 7-of-11 from the field, including 4-of-5 from three-point range, in 23 minutes off the bench. Littlepage-Buggs added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Bears (11-3, 0-1 Big 12), while Van Gytenbeek contributed 11 points and seven assists in nearly 40 minutes.
Snudda Collins led Texas Tech (14-0, 1-0) with 21 points on 6-of-12 shooting, converting all eight of her free throw attempts. Maupin finished with 11 points.
Baylor shot 36.8% from the field (21-of-57) and 28.6% from three-point range (6-of-21). Texas Tech connected on 22 of 57 shots (38.6%) and was 4-of-22 from beyond the arc (18.2%).
