Oskar Brostrom Poulsen seals the match and remains undefeated in singles
LINCOLN, Neb. – Baylor men's tennis (6-3, 0-0) secured the first win of its two-match road trip, defeating Nebraska (4-3) on Friday night 4-2.
THE RUNDOWN
In doubles, the No. 9 ranked duo of Marko Miladinovic and Oskar Brostrom Poulsen fell to Shepp/Johann on Court One, 2-6, never being able to capture momentum.
However, Baylor won convincingly on Courts Two and Three. Devin Badenhorst/Luc Koenig and Alexandru Chirita/Zsombor Velcz secured victories over Mueller/Sysoev and Linquet/Torres Espinosa, respectively, with identical 6-3, 6-3 scores.
Moving into singles, Marko Miladinovic made quick work of Wells, dominating both sets 6-2, 6-1 to give Baylor its second point of the night.
However, on Court Four, Zsombor Velcz fell in a grueling 5-7 loss in the first set. The second set got away from him, and he lost to Johann 5-7, 1-6.
The Bears, up 2-1, supplemented their point total on Court Five. Chirita finished in two sets. He handedly won the first set against Sysoev, 6-3, and fended off a comeback in the second set, 6-4.
Meanwhile, on Court One, Badenhorst struggled against Mueller. The Husker came out fast, and Badenhorst found himself down 6-2. The second set saw fireworks, coming down to a tiebreaker, but Badenhorst was unable to force a third set, 7-6(3).
With Baylor up 3-2, the air in Lincoln was thick with tension. Two courts remained, and the night culminated with Courts Two and Three delving into a third set.
On two, Oskar Brostrom Poulsen found himself in a battle with Shepp. Set one resolved through tiebreaker, 7-6(5). Brostrom Poulsen couldn't retain his rhythm in the second set, dropping it 6-3. Luckily, in the final set of the night, he found it. Brostrom Poulsen dominated his final set, 6-1, to clinch a Baylor win. His spring singles record remains unblemished at 7-0.
On three, Koenig began his match hot, taking set one 6-3. Unfortunately, he was unable to get the win in a close second set, 5-7. His match would go unfinished.
HEAD COACH MICHAEL WOODSON
"We got the job done in doubles. I thought one team punched first on every court. It wasn't us on Court One, but it was us on Courts Two and Three. We did a really nice job of serving out the matches from there. We got what proved to be the deciding point I felt like.
"Going into singles it felt like we had a lot of momentum early on a bunch of courts. Credit to Nebraska; they're a well-coached and veteran team. They didn't go away on maybe everywhere but Court Six. They made it really hard for us up and down the lineup. Maybe it wasn't our best tennis in a few spots, but we had a really good opportunity to serve out three straight-set matches. We weren't able to do that on Court Three but we were able to close it on out on five and six.
"That put us up 3-1, and then it gets hard. The guy on three got some momentum and got on top of Luc. Obviously, Oskar's was a battle the whole time. But when it came down to Oskar and Luc, Oskar did a fantastic job of acting himself early and really put a ton of pressure on his opponent. He was able to get a couple of breaks and serve incredibly well to close it out.
"Anytime you can win on the road, it's something you'll take. Are there things that we need to work on? Absolutely. Do we have some frustrations here and there? For sure. But we'll take a road win and run any day."
