Ohma’s sizzling back nine helps senior land back in the top 15
PING ASU FINAL RESULTS
PHOENIX, Ariz. – Baylor senior golfer Silje Ohma strung together six birdies and shot a sizzling 5-under 31 on the back nine to record her fourth-consecutive top-15 finish on Wednesday at the PING ASU Invitational at Papago Golf Club.
Ohma had the Bears' best score of the day at 1-under-par 71 and tied for 12th at 3-under 213, helping Baylor to a fourth-place finish overall at 7-under 857 in the three-day, 54-hole tournament.
Second-ranked USC was the wire-to-wire winner, shooting 23-under 843, followed by No. 23 Arizona State (12-under, 852), Cal State-Fullerton (9-under, 855) and Baylor as the only four teams in the 16-team field to shoot under par.
"I feel like we moved in the right direction this week," said Baylor head coach Jay Goble, who have had nine top-five finishes in 10 tournaments this season. "Finishing the tournament under par against a stronger field and finishing in the top five again, that's a positive."
Sophomore Malena Castro posted her team-high sixth top-10 finish, shooting 1-over 73 on Wednesday and tying for eighth at 4-under 212. After starting the day just three shots behind the individual leader, Castro rolled in a birdie putt on the par-4 18th to move back into the top 10.
"Malena had another top-10 finish," Goble said, "and I am proud of her and excited for where her game is headed."
Junior transfer Yurang Li gave Baylor its third top-20 finisher, shooting 3-over 75 in the final round and tying for 18th at even-par 216. Freshman Amelia Wan had her second counting score of the weekend with a 3-over 75 and finished tied for 31st at 4-over 220.
Bridget Boczar and Charlotte Brook, playing as an individual, shot 8-over and 7-over, respectively, to round out the Bears' scores.
Next up for the Baylor women is a short trip down Highway 6 for The "Mo"Morial April 6-8 at Traditions Club in Bryan.
"We have one more event before the big tournaments start," Goble said, "and we will do all that is in our control to be ready for Big 12's, (the NCAA) regionals and nationals."
