Baylor Bear Insider
Two years ago, when Baylor was ranked No. 1 for the first time in program history, the Bears turned it over 29 times in an 89-68 loss at West Virginia.
On the brink of possibly cracking the poll again, Baylor (11-6, 3-2) goes back to Morgantown on the heels of a 73-62 win over eighth-ranked Texas Tech. The Bears face West Virginia (9-9, 1-5) at 8 p.m. Monday at WVU Coliseum in a game that will be broadcast by ESPNU.
This is the second of three straight weeks of quick turnarounds. Baylor followed up a 73-68 loss to Kansas with a 73-69 road win over Oklahoma State last Monday.
"The Oklahoma State trip definitely helps us to prepare," said senior guard Makai Mason, who has scored in double figures in nine consecutive games and averaging 14.7 points per game. "We know we can't get too high off of this game. We know we've got to rest our bodies to prepare. I think we'll be ready. You can't take anybody for granted in this league."
Kansas found that out two days ago when the Jayhawks lost to last-place West Virginia, 65-64. The Mountaineers scored seven unanswered points in the last 2 ½ minutes to stun the Jayhawks and pick up their first conference win of the year after an 0-5 start.
"It's just a matter of being mentally tough enough to do the right things," West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said. "I'm just happy to win. This isn't where we thought we'd be."
Despite losing a pair of talented guards in Daxter Miles and Jevon Carter, a rook with the Memphis Grizzlies, West Virginia was 13th in the Associated Press preseason rankings and third in the Big 12 coaches' preseason poll.
And it hasn't helped that the Mountaineers have been without 6-8 junior forward Sagabe Konate, who's missed the last nine games with a knee injury. He was averaging a team-high 13.6 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game when he went down.
Their first four conference losses were by single digits before getting blown out by TCU, 98-67, last Tuesday in Fort Worth.
"You hear 0-5, and you think, 'Are they down? Are they not playing well?''' Drew said. "And then you watch the games, and obviously a lot of one-, two-possession games. They make a shot, make a free throw, a different play, and now all of a sudden they're 4-1 and it's a completely different ball game. Obviously, they played very well against Kansas. They played well in a lot of games, just hadn't gotten the wins. So, typical West Virginia team, real physical, really tough inside."
While Huggins hasn't been able to replace the backcourt duo of Carter and Miles, he still has an imposing front line with 6-8 forwards Esah Ahmad (12.5 ppg, 5.5 rebounds) and Wesley Harris (8.3 ppg, 4.8 rebounds) and 6-9 sophomore Andrew Gordon.
"Their identity is still that physical team. They play a lot of forwards, a lot of bigger guys," Drew said. "So, it's not the real quick guard play they've had in the past. . . . We have to have great ball pressure so they can't just move the ball where they want to and run the offense they want to run. If we limit them to one shot, and they have four guys crashing, now we have an advantage on the transition. If they're getting offensive rebounds and scoring, now they have an advantage because they can set their press up."
Like West Virginia, Baylor's also had to deal with life without its big man. Sophomore forward Tristan Clark (14.6 ppg, 6.3 rebounds, 2.4 blocks) has missed the last three games with a knee injury and will have season-ending surgery on Jan. 31.
The Bears have re-invented themselves since losing Clark, going to more of an outside attack with guards King McClure (10.8 ppg), Mason (14.7 ppg) and freshman Jared Butler (8.2 ppg). In last week's wins, Baylor hit 15 3-pointers in the road win at Oklahoma State and then drained 11 in Saturday's 73-62 upset of Tech.
Since being inserted into the starting lineup, Butler has averaged 16.3 points and 4.3 assists while shooting 17-of-36 overall (47.2 percent), 10-of-23 from outside the arc (43.5 percent) and a perfect 5-of-5 from the line.
"Why he's playing so well is because he's letting the game come to him and taking what they give him," Drew said of Butler, who had a game-high 19 points in the win over Tech.
"Older guys like me, we have to stay in his ear, telling him you've got to stay grounded," McClure said. "I still joke with him every now and then like, 'You still can't beat me, you're still not that good.' Just try to keep him level-headed. He's been playing amazing. He's really stepped up with Tristan being out. He's a really elite player, especially to be so young. My man just turned 18, and he scored 19 against a top-10 team. It's rare."
After Monday's game, Baylor returns home to face Alabama (11-6) at 11 a.m. Saturday in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge. The Crimson Tide has wins over Kentucky, Arizona and Wichita State and nearly knocked off top-ranked Tennessee on Saturday in Knoxville.
